The two police officers were arrested for allegedly stealing US77,050 (R525,000) which was skimmed from US600,000 (R4.1 million) which was being counted at Polokwane police station under the 44-year-old lieutenant colonel's supervision, said Lieutenant Colonel Mohale Ramatseba in a statement.

"The suspect's house was searched and about R127,000 cash and US3,800 was found hidden in the shallow grave in her yard and some in her house," said Ramatseba.

"Some of the money was allegedly used by the suspect to purchase expensive furniture, building materials and settling of her accounts.

"Preliminary investigations also revealed that some of the stolen money was given to family members, friends and other people," he said.
They were just spreading the love.

The lieutenant colonel, who is part of the provincial Tactical Response Team (TRT), was arrested on Friday night.

A 30-year-old police constable was also arrested after he was allegedly given R75,000 by the arrested lieutenant colonel. R50,000 in cash was found at his parent's home at ga-Mothapo in Mankweng. Another R25,000 was spent on clothes and friends.

The constable's brothers, a teacher in Moletji and a clerk at Mahwelereng SA Police Service Emergency Centre, were also arrested for receiving money suspected of being stolen.

The lieutenant colonel and constable will appear in the Polokwane Magistrates' court on Monday.

The police officers were investigated by the provincial and national Directorate for Priority Crime Investigations with the SA Revenue Service, Customs and Local Criminal Record Centre.

The US600,000 was confiscated by the TRT on the road between Polokwane and Makhodo on August 4, 2010. 50-year-old Faizel Mohammed was arrested for violating the Currency and Exchange Act and the Income Tax Act.
