Cop arrested for allegedly spending R11000 on crash victim’s credit card

A POLICE constable has been arrested for allegedly stealing the credit card of a dead hit-and-run accident victim and going on an R11000 spending spree, buying clothes, petrol and jewellery.

Constable Ziyaad Domingo was arrested by the Hawks unit on Wednesday for allegedly stealing the credit card of Dr Calvin Blignault, 30, after he was killed in an accident in Cape Road, Port Elizabeth, two months ago.

Blignault, a mechanical engineering lecturer at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, died when a car crashed into him from behind while he was at a red traffic light on his motorcycle at the corner of Cape Road and Stella Londt Drive.

Domingo, based at Mount Road police station, briefly appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court yesterday. He was released on R200 bail.

“A month after Blignault’s death his parents noticed that money was being deducted from his bank account,” police Captain Johan Rheeder said. “They went to the police and opened a case of theft and fraud.”

Detectives tracked the credit card after goods worth about R11000 were bought from shops around Port Elizabeth.

“A range of items from clothes and petrol to jewellery were bought on the credit card,” said Rheeder. “After he was arrested, police confiscated about R6000 worth of goods believed to have been bought on the card.”

Domingo told the court yesterday he had found the card.

Rheeder said they had already instituted departmental steps which could possibly lead to Domingo’s dismissal. A disciplinary committee will decide his fate today.

Rheeder said they had not found any link to suggest Domingo was involved in the actual accident, which was still being investigated.

So you find the card and just use it like there's no tomorrow?
 
Article is a bit unclear, was the cop assigned to the accident scene or did he just happen across the credit card? Either way it's totally unacceptable for him to think that a found credit card equals free spending spree.

Jip, as a cop his morality and ethics should be unquestionable. Obviously he is no better than any other white collar criminal. If he thinks he'll get away with it, he will do the crime.

Yes, he was.
If you think that this is bad, you must see what is happening to the investigation into the biker's death. He was hit by a BMW driven by a known perlemoen diver who was dicing his buddy going up Cape Road (in PE). Car was found "abandoned" 2 days later. And there the story ends...
