Police in Melmoth, KwaZulu-Natal, claimed they could not attend to an attempted rape complaint one block from their police station because of a lack of transport, according to a report on Wednesday.

The Witness reported that on Saturday, Mthonjaneni Municipality protection services manager Derek Horne heard the screams of two girls and reported the matter to police.

Local police said they could not respond to the complaint because there was no police car available.

Horne apparently told the charge office that an attempted rape was taking place only a block from the police station, but could get no undertaking from police that they would investigate.

Horne resolved to help the girls himself.

"I walked through an open security gate into the building, heading for the source of the screams and saw two young girls, I estimate about 12 years and 16 years old. They had been tied to cement windows, with rope around their hands, and two young men were attempting to rape them," Horne was quoted as saying.

The perpetrators ran off, and Horne helped the traumatised girls.

Captain Tienkie van Vuuren, spokesperson for Eshowe police, said an internal investigation would be launched into the matter.

Really shocking:eek::mad:

Unbelievable. This is who we trust in to keep us safe. I hope this gets taken up by the girls parents.

considering that most of the cops are overweight, doubt they would have even made it there alive ..... surely there must be some sort of physical fitness required for police??
Also, this nonsense about not having transport is used all the time and really needs to get sorted out, especially when you see there are tons of vehicles at the station, but yet they claim no transport.

Pathetic ,so much for dedicated police ,the useless ones should be dismissed .
Seems like some of the police are in sheltered employment.

Why is rape so prevalent in this country?

I heard a guy "joke" with a girl he was speaking to that if this is South Africa, and if she doesn't give "it" to him, he will take it by force. She laughed it off.

I think the bigger issue is that the "rapists" did not even care that it was only a block away from the Police. It seems that Police visibility is a problem, and the lack of action is abused.

IIRC I heard that only a few percentage of rapist gets prosecuted? So they not scared of being caught.

They would get charged if bust whilst raping two tied up girls.
I hope the @sshole at the cop shop gets fired and so does the shift commander.
This is disgusting and there is no excuse for this.

Reference Rosebank?

It would take a lot more than that to change things.

Don't they go on intense physical training before they become cops?

Yes: how to sleep at the charge desk, how to find the best place to park & sleep without being disturbed, how to answer a phone whilst remaining asleep ...
