Cops' 'inhumane' attitude to be probed

"Johannesburg - The alleged "callous" and "inhumane" attitude displayed by Booysens and Mondeor police station officers to a distressed woman should be investigated immediately, Gauteng community safety MEC Khabisi Mosunkutu said on Monday.

The mother of two children who were shot dead by their father last week, went to the police to beg for help shortly before the shooting, but was reportedly ignored.

"Insidious and cruel behaviour such as this does not belong to a police service of a democratic order such as ours," said Mosunkutu in a statement.

The Star newspaper reported that 36-year-old Sello Lucas Nthite shot his 7-year-old son and 3-year-old daughter in the bedroom of his Naturena flat, before turning the gun on himself last Wednesday.

The shooting happened between 17:30 and 18:00, but the children's mother was already pleading for help from the police as early as 15:45, after her estranged husband sent her an SMS saying what he planned to do.

According to the newspaper report, she went to Booysens police station and showed a police sergeant the SMS and a restriction order she had against Nthite, granted last month after he had beaten her in front of their son.

The policeman said he could not help her because a page was missing from the restriction order, and Naturena - where the father lived - was not part of the Booysens police district.

The mother was told to go to the Mondeor police station instead, where she could not be helped immediately. The police officer there told her to wait for the next shift to come in, because it was nearly time for the shift change.

"Such backward and anti-social behaviour must be investigated immediately and those in charge must ensure that appropriate action is taken without waste of time," said Mosunkutu after getting a briefing on the incident.

Many people will tell you that such things do not exist because we are underspending for law and order and so money which could have been used to train and pay these cops better (and so make them more friendly) was spent building stadiums and giving fat bonuses! It is a common meme around townships that cops often do not come out if there is shooting, but only come a while after it ends. Of course I don't blame them (risk your life for poor pay) but then again if the cops don't come, who will?

But those people would be idiots, because we spent millions training new police officers for the world cup (and after) as well as year after year throwing more money at crime prevention. These specific cops were douchebags. Do we need more sophisticated commentry than that ?

If you knew any people from the townships and you spoke to them - you don't but make some black friends - you'd know that these cops were not 'douchebags' (to use use Americanism) but often common examples of what they (township dwellers) can expect. Hence people often perform vigilante justice viz "assault by the community". Go and ask.

Training a handful of SWAT and riot cops is not the same as what was needed above. It's a morale, training and discipline problem, but money is needed to train more cops and equip them better. The example of the cop shop which was robbed is a another great example or how many police stations use Chubb to protect themselves. Then the story seen in the foreign media of police losing 1000s of weapons. Even in the above case this tragedy happened in 2 police stations. Ask any victim who had to get a J88 form and more than likely they will not be able to get one - they're usually told they need a "doctors' note" first - which is BS.

This in no way means I think all or even most cops are incompetent or lazy. Not at all - but the sad reality is that poor pay, poor training, poor staffing (under staffing and therefore overwork), morale, burn-out, etc all factor into how police perform their duties. Again, money spent on the World Cup could have been used to pay cops and equip them better.

Hey bud, I totally agree. However, you missed the most important ingredient ! That's INTELLIGENCE ! In the past (old SA) police man were tested for this one thing first and then came the rest. With the 'New SA', the Intelligence test had to be dropped because it was found to work against the 'Affirmative Action' policy of the new government. The vast majority of Africans did not pass it and did not help with the 'transformation' of the Police. Well, the racist IQ is long history and the transformation is almost complet by now. Go figure . . .

Spending millions to buy yet more sophisticated crime-fighting equipment for a corrupt and ignorant police force who wouldn’t know where the ‘on’ switch is, or spending money on patronage (to ensure votes) by employing still more ignorant phuckers to ‘transform’ and wreck the justice system, doesn’t count.

The training of the police for the WC was in crowd control and anti-terror (SWAT) tactics. It wasn't about training more cops to do law enforcement and crime prevention work, improving their equipment (vests, cars, weapons) and pay. It is out of whack with the realities most people face in SA, unless of course SWAT and crowd control are our major problem areas.
