My personal opinion on this, now that I have read both articles and rewatched the clip several times. I can only conclude that van der Merwe grossly overreacted. He most likely has a short temper and doesn't explore any probabilities beyond his own nose. Could there have been an attempt to steal the phone, yes, but assault is assault.

This didn’t happen on his property; this happened in a public space on private property within his own space.

Him being in the mind that the woman had stolen his property, given the circumstances, then he should have engaged civilly. He has shown zero tact other than aggression.

There not being CCTV coverage, he doesn't have a case.

Defending the thieve and blaming the victim. Great.

This incident shows how emotions are exaggerated because of our failed justice system making people take the law into their own hands because the law is so useless.
It’s easy for you to say that in hindsight.

Not just that justice hardly gets served in SA. The problem is so many people have been the victims of crime and moral degenaretion. So many people I have met or know has been raped/hi-jacked/burglared/house robberies/assault/defrauded/murdered that it takes a simple thing as a cellphone theft to push people over the edge as we are all living on the edge, expecting anything at any moment. So past trauma can lead to reactions that are just over the top.

I've seen a few setups where there is NO recording (not even for a second) as it's only for live monitoring. It's one of those companies where the owner spends all his time watching you reply to an email so he has something else to complain about, like the number of times you hit backspace, or that you looked at your phone when it rang, or that you spent 30 seconds longer at the coffee station that necessary, etc.

Uh... Yes it's normal, but this is a restaurant in Franschhoek. If I as an individual can afford 2 weeks worth of HD/4k footage then they can afford at least one weeks worth. Come on. And if you know there's an event, you grab the footage straight away.

People on Mybb are not the average person. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the owner doesn't have a clue what HD or 4K even mean other than he's seen it on movies his nephew gives him.

Grabbing the footage also might not be easy, some of those Chinese systems from the mid-2000s took about four days for you to figure out HOW to view the recordings, and then exported to a proprietary format which was useless outside of the system.

You'll also be surprised how many people are running terribly outdated systems - why replace it if it works (even though I don't know how to use it and nobody can support it anymore)?

My mom worked in the private security sector until fairly recently. You'll be shocked how many smaller companies had outdated hardware - the worst was one running black and white CCTV CRT monitors (the type that has an input for each camera and you can switch between cameras by pushing a button on the monitor) and recorded to VHS. They didn't have tapes anymore or the VHS part was broken or whatever, so control used it purely for live monitoring.
