Copy items off the new HD decoder?

I have a Grex and a Red Pro, and they both remove the copy protection on the DStv HDPVR and TopTV decoders.
The xdimax site seems to have been down for awhile now though :-(

I'm new to this so this may be a stupid question. If the signal coming out of my DStv HD PVR can be displayed on the TV then it's presumably not copy protected in any way. I can buy a thingummybob on eBay that converts from 3 RCA cables to a USB 2.0 plug for less than $10. Can't I just plug it into the RCA outputs on the PVR and into the USB on my laptop to record PVR output?

Yes you can, but it will not be HD quality signal.

The HDPVR only outputs HD over HDMI, and that signal is HDCP, so therefore copy protected.
