Warning about piracy in South Africa

Copyright practitioner and attorney Chola Makgamathe has warned that content piracy has devastating economic consequences.

“In South Africa, piracy does more than reduce profits; it erodes the creative backbone of the industry,” Makgamathe said.
"It robs Creators of the minuscule 2% we pay them"

He means that in an indirect way.

You see if you pirate Hollywood, or if you watch it from other sources, eg VPN and Hulu or whatever, you are not buying DSTV or Showmax and they can't produce local soap operas here.

I very much doubt too many people would want to pirate our locally produced stuff.

Link to the report, the first in history to supposedly prove a real negative effect would be nice. Of course crime of any sort is an issue, I'm just not buying Dstv's desperate attempt to stay in business to be the result of anything other then their own stupid decisions.

On the other hand piracy stops large amounts of foreign exchange from leaving the country.

I don't mind paying the content creators , but not if MC is the middleman.

MC = BEE and SARS kickbacks for the cadres.

Let's face it, a lot of SARS revenue feeds the cadres.

How much local content get pirated? I mean, Leon Schuster only made so many movies :p
You might be surprised actually. Technically people using IPTV services and things like MyFamilyCinema or WatchlistPro are also pirating and I haven't met many Saffers outside of SA who don't use them to watch local content from back home. Even in SA loads of people use them to watch old local TV shows.
