Core i5 versus Core i7

i7 is still more sophisticated, it supports multi-threading for each core, ie 8 virtual cores. The i5 does not have multi-threading, only the 4 cores.

And the version of the i7 with the larger pin-out supports triple channel RAM, the i5 and the new i7 only support dual channel RAM.

But the i5 also has some new features, eg the ability to overclock one CPU automatically, while slowing the other cores down - this is for applications that don't use the multiple cores.

ye and u can built an entry level i7 for a similar price to the i5, looking at cpu and mobo expenses. i7 ftw:D

So you guys are saying buying i5 is silly.. go bottom range i7?

The don't fit into the same socket = epic fail.
Will i3 also need a new socket ?

This is why AMD is making a killing for much lower prices - they allow people with old AM2 motherboards to use their new AM3 CPUs.

PCF December has the I5 on par if not slightly ahead of the I7 on Gaming performance. It appears gamers need not look further than I5 750?

So how many sockets are there currently in their line up then, 3 ?

One for northbridge DDR2 memory controllers (Core2), one for dual channel DDR3 (i3&i5) and one for triple channel DDR3 (i7&i9)?

That strategy did not work too good for AMD when they first when with integrated memory controllers - remember socket 462, 754 and 939 ? Buyers were confused and in the end they went with a socket solution that allows backwards compatible CPUs to work in them.

My guess is that intel will learn this lesson too once they standardize on either dual or tri channel platforms.

My Q9550 is still twiddling it's thumbs most of the time. No need to upgrade.

does the base i5 have a higher clock speed than the base i7?

i think one of the sockets will die out, and i want to wait until i know which one that will be.

The first one that would die is the old 775 one. Just as Socket-A died out cause using a northbridge to talk to memory is bad (something AMD figured out 5 years ago).

That means you have the Dual Channel socket - i3 and i5 and the Tri Channel socket - i7 and i9.

Personally I would just go with Tri Channel and make them so they can work in dual channel mode if only two modules are present.

Come on intel, you took so long to learn that integrated memory controllers are the way to go - now standardize your sockets and make CPUs backwards compatible (once DDR4 comes out).

I wouldn't hold your breath. Intel have stated that LGA1366 will be used for high end i7 /i9 series processors and up, whereas the LGA1156 socket replaces the LGA775, with a whole series of chipsets planned for future release to support it.

Seems like you will be with your current rig for some time to come.

Not really, happens in all aspects of life if you think about it...
