Can anyone tell me what they would recommend .

i 5 cpu or the Core 2 Duo.

I was under the impression that i5 would be quicker. But after setting up 2x HP Probooks, one had an i5 and the other was previous model Core2 Duo. Dont know if it was just me , but the Core 2 Duo,, felt a little snappier. All the rest of the specs were the same( RAM/ HDD etc)

Tx

Funny thing i get the same feeling comparing centrinos to core 2 duos, maybe its got to do with power saving and efficiency. but some number crunching will show the leader.

It comes down to the numbers, and speed the processors are running,
typically a 2Ghz i5 will be faster than a 2Ghz core2duo,
although a 2.6Ghz core2duo will be faster than a 2Ghz i5
what processor speeds were these two lappies running?

Socket 775 (Core Two range.) is obsolete so get the i5 with socket 1156 so that it will be possible to upgrade your CPU in future as new CPU's come out.

Ok, so what is fatser a 2.4 Dual Core or a 1.6 i7

LGA1156 has its replacement already which should launch end of this year. A few more new chips should be available for it, but not many. Dam Intel and their socket changing ways!

My desktop is a Core 2 Duo @ 3.16GHz, my laptop a i5 @ 2.6 GHz,

using 3D Mark 2006's CPU score, the i5 score very close to the Core 2 duo. Both have 2GB ram, both run Windows 7 32bit,

Usually a i5 will come with DDR3 RAM and faster busses, as well as newer tech, so I'd go with the i5.
