Correctional Services confirms hostage situation

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Correctional Services has confirmed a hostage situation currently in progress at Westville Prison in Durban.

Department spokesperson Thulani Mduli on Tuesday said a prison official had locked himself in the armoury.

"A male official, [a] manager [has] currently locked himself up in [the] arsenal. We don’t have reasons for his actions thus far, since he is neither opening the door nor answering his phone as we speak.

"We have called up SAPS for help in this situation."

News24 previously reported that a female officer had sealed herself inside the armoury.

Sources within the police and the Department of Correctional Services previously told News24 the allegedly suicidal warder was located in the Medium A Section.

"The police are all over the show here and [the official] is inside the arsenal. We keep all the handguns and assault rifles inside there," a DCS warder had told News24.

It is understood that members of the police's elite Special Task Force are standing by at the prison.

'Hostage' drama ends at Westville Prison

Durban – A "hostage" situation at Westville Prison in Durban has come to an end.

ER24 paramedics on Tuesday said they were transporting the allegedly suicidal man to hospital.

Correctional Services spokesperson Thulani Mduli earlier told News24 that a male official had locked himself in the armoury room at the facility.

ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring said the official was now being transported to hospital.

"The matter will be subject to police investigation. He is being transported to eThekwini Heart Hospital."

Correctional Services denies official was suicidal

In a statement, the department said officials "received assistance" from the South African Police Services to gain access to the locked room.

"Through the assistance of the South African Police Service, we managed to gain access into the arsenal where our official was locked inside. He was found lying down holding his chest, with visible swollen neck. He has been rushed to the hospital for urgent medical attention.

"Earlier media reports labelling this official as suicidal located in the Medium A section cannot be true. Instead, he is the arsenal controller and had the utmost (sic) responsibility of ensuring that all doors leading to the arsenal are locked."
