Hi I'm looking to buy a used manual corolla. My choices currently are:

2014 1.8 Exclusive with 27000km for R200 000.00 or

2016 1.4 d4d prestige with 15000km for R250 000.00

Every cent counts, on the 2014 model warranty extension is R3900. I'm looking for the best value for money as I plan to run the car to its last. I am worried about fuel consumption on the 1.8 but how much more fuel can it use? Please share your thoughts. Do not try and put me on another brand or another model.

Thanks in advance.

I had a 2009 D4d exclusive, great car. Very comfortable and exceptionally light on fuel with great torque from the diesel. That was a 2l engine but heard great things about the 1.4

I would opt for the second but not sure what the difference is between the exclusive and prestige.

Exclusive is higher spec, above the common features it shares with the Prestige it has traction control, stability control, climate control, cruise control, rain sensing wipers, light sensing headlights and 7 airbags instead of 4 for the Prestige.

I stand to be corrected though as the models from OP are from 2014 and 2016.

Sad thing is the whole smart entry system does nothing for hijacking :( Op must ask the question, which is better, petrol car with more features at R50k less or the newer diesel with less features but obviously longer warranty. Can also attest that the diesel engines gave me no hassles or nonsense in entire time had my old car ( six years ).

I do see that the power is a LOT less with the 1.4 ( 66Kw vs 90+kw ). That could hurt, the old one was 94kw.

Besides from the obvious that one is petrol and other diesel.
The Exclusive model is your top of the range spec model, it has got standard feautures such as Traction control, Stability control, Approach home safe lighting time delay park headlights, Emergency brake hazardlights, Hillstart assist hillholder,
Start stop button, Rain sensor auto wipers, Auto dim interior mirror, Electric adjust mirrors, 7 airbags as oppose to Prestige only 4.
Cruise control, keyless central locking vs remote, Light sensor auto on off lights. The Prestige does not have these features as standard.

The 1.8 petrol has have an average of 7 L/100km within a average range of 786 km
The 1.4 d4d has an average of 4.5 L/100km within a average range of 1222 km
These are just average claims by manufacturer, just add +2 /100km and you get a rough idea of real idea and depending on your driving behavior.

Have you looked at the Elantra

Have you looked at the Elantra. Its a much better rated and build car and most old ones come with the 5 year/150000 warranty and the newer ones with 7 year/200 000 warranty. I know many a 3 series bmw driver that switched to the elantra, whose still very much happy with it.

They did do a small spec change mid 2015 with LED running lights being the biggest outward change.

I have a 2015 D4D, real world daily driving gives me 6l/100km - worst case, with a heavish foot, mostly at 5.7l/100km.

Long trips it comes down to around 5-5.2l/100km with said heavy foot. I did manage 4.6l/100km driving at the speed limits down to Durban once.

Should get 8 to 9l/100km with 1.8 - all depends on the driving style

I had a look at the 1.8 today. The inside was definitely not impressive. It looked tired and it seems that the previous owner did not look after it. I even found cobwebs in the spare wheel. I was shocked that the dealer did not do a proper valet. It drove like a 1.6 and not like a 1.8. The engine seemed tight. The dealer wants R205000.00 and will put new tires of a brand of thier choice. I found a 1.6 Prestige 2015 with 26000km for R230 000.00.

It's no match for Corolla exclusive, that Corolla is so highy specced that the only thing that it can't match the German premium sedans on is performance.

Why did you have to be that guy?

I have looked at the elantra and many other brands and cars during the past few months. I have decided that corolla it is.

I got a 1.8 exclusive last year April as a company car . I have done 50 000km since then. I must admit that I didn't like the car when I just got it but after getting used to the CVT gearbox the car has really grown on me.

The exclusive really is FULL house . My only gripe is that the mirror link function doesn't work. I've tried it with my IP6 and Samsung S6 no joy and at times the keyless entry doesn't open the doors

As for fuel consumption I have a fairly heavy right foot and still manage 8.5l/100km.

It's not the fastest car out of the blocks but once you hit the highway she lifts her skirt and runs. Once you get the front seat setup correctly you can do a lot of millage with minimal fatuge. I do about 260 km every day and honestly if it wasn't for the comfort of the Corolla I would have looked for another job long ago.

Serving at the local Halfway Toyota has also been a pleasant experience.

The ride is geared towards comfort but the car sits nicely in tight fast turns with no body roll. Brakes are also good. Nice big boot and sufficient legroom at the back for two adults.

I do notice that the rear bumpers gets scratched when loading items into the boot.

Headlights are also very good. Although on the highway with late night driving the brights are almost too bright from reflection off the blue info boards. Never experienced that before.

In summary if someone asked me about a Corolla 11 months ago Zebra cabs would have been the first image that would have come to mind. But now after living with one for almost a year I can confidently recommend one. Although I was a bit shocked when I saw what they cost new.

The 1.6 is probably a winner - newer/maybe some warranty , not as heavy on fuel but still a prestige with all the good stuff

I would love the 1.8 Exclusive. The one I'm looking at is a 2014 model and was not cared for. With newer models bieng out of my budget I'm looking at the 1.6 Prestige. I think I will miss the cruise control and extra power of the 1.8 but money talks.

I would take the 1.8 I don't like bigger cars with small engines especially if it doesn't come with a turbo. I drove the 1.4 a few times and with more than 1 person in the car it's slow, dead and you struggle in traffic.

Of petrol wasn't any concern the 1.8 would be the answer but the fuel costs and jot being in top condition is quite a drawback, that being said with such low mileage and recent model it can't be that bad inside?

Won't a good valet/detailing sort it out?

You can retrofit cruise control to the 1.6 if you want.

I have the required parts....doesn't plug and play on the 1.4 unfortunately

If only. The door panels in the insides and the leather seats got a number of scratches which I think a valet won't fix. The good lining is frayed in certain places. The front of the dash has scratches as well. Definitely was not cared for.

What the approximate cost?
And does id interfere with the warranty?
