Anyone had any cosmetic dentistry done or know of someone that had?

I'm particularly interested in the costs (ballpark figures) for implants and porcelain veneers. Also are there any good affordable dentists in the Gauteng region that you can recommend?

tx

Yea i went to a dentist at the medicross.

Got porcelain veneers for my 6 front teeth, cost 12k. They look amazing. He did not make them hollywood white so they blend in well. Implants i dunno.

Really. 12k for 6 teeth? Thats cheap.

I understand the treatment is not reversable? Why did you do it if I may ask?

Thats beyond cheap, i was under the impression it was 3-4k per tooth...

veneers are between 1-2K per tooth and are quite cheep. if you go with crowns/implants it will become expensive. I had a look at a quote for 6 teeth (front) for crowns and it would cost 38K - roughly 4K per crown. Aside from the high price (thats like a few terabytes of downloads or a really nice holiday) the irreversible process (the dentist will have to remove tooth-structure to fit the crowns) put me off. Wikipedia explains the procedure very well - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crown_(dentistry).

I use a dentist in Bryanston who is more expensive than others but generally does exceptional work.

Ya remember one thing the medicross is not your average rip you off and charge through the roof place.

I have no idea if it is reversible, all i know if they will dis colour and they will last 10 years or longer.

I am not sure what i got to be honest, all i know is he made my old teeth look like something from a horror flick and then put something over them and they cost 2k per tooth

The one day i have to wait for my veeners to be ready was horrid, my teeth looked shocking, they shave them and you cannot believe the stress i felt that day. The next day was pure bliss :D

AFAIK, one would use veneers if you have discolouration under the enamel, i.e. where bleeching wont work. My problem with veneers is exactly as you describe, they 'shave' off perfectly good enamel to fit the veneers and that is irreversable.

Are there no alternatives to veneers, that are sort of non-destructive?

Nope but dude, you have no idea how it transforms your mouth.

My teeth looked ok apart from being rather yellow and stained, also they never looked the same if that makes sense, i went and had this done and my teeth just look incredible dude. The difference is amazing. It is perfection and long lasting. I am so happy you cannot believe. I was not incredibly happy when half my teeth where gone but the end result is just incredible and for only 12k. I thought i would go get a quote and was looking at a minimum 25k. So you can imagine when my teeth got shaved i started freaking thinking OMG 12k why did go for such a cheap option haha. Again though best 12k i have ever spent.

How long have you had the veneers now? Can you pretty much chew anything or are you prevented from biting certain stuff?

Well now about 3 months.

I don't bite anything, not even an apple. Not because i can't but because i know it may damage them. I do not bite many things though so it is not really a problem.

Here are some E-mail corresponce from a company called Ti-Tec (www.ti-tec.com): Regarding their implants: (just a general enquiry so I doubt I'm bound by confidentiality (5 November 2009).

E-mail 1:
Dear Ken,

Thank you for your e-mail. We supply dental implants directly to the dental surgeon that places the implants. It is important to know whether the chosen dentist is contracted in or out for medical aid rates. If you can advise as to what area you reside, I can then refer you to the right doctor. It is very difficult to give you a price as the doctor’s fees have to be taken into account. There are numerous factors to consider namely, do you have sufficient bone levels, bone width etc. This can only be determined once we have an x-ray of your mouth and the doctor has consulted you as to all these factors.

Should you require any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me on 082 788 1641

Kind regards

Tanja

Dear Kenneth,

My clients that are contracted in to medical aid rates charge ± R8000.00-R9000.00 per implant. Please note that the more implants you do the cheaper they become. You can phone Isabel at Dr. Minnaar’s practice for a more accurate quote. Her number is 011-975-2980. She deals with all quotations for patients and is very clued up regarding the pricing. He is a contracted in practice situated in Johannesburg and charges very reasonable rates.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further queries.

Kind regards

Tanja

I see there's a new product which is non-destructive and completely reversable called thineers (check out thineers.co.za). Looks like a very viable alternative to porcelain veneers.

Anyone have any experience with this product?

If you want a horse's smile then it looks awesome :D

This site has a good guide to the types of cosmetic dentistry. Personally, I would go for lumineers which are ultra thin veneers that don't require much of your existing tooth to be removed.

i've had all my top teeth crowned - including the back ones. and i have not regretted doing it. my teeth were in a state after having children. also my original teeth didn't show when i smiled, so when i had the crowns done i had some "touching up and refurbishing" done to the crowns. i bite on biltong, crunch on hard peppermints. they feel like my own teeth. i would recommend crowns to those who aren't happy with their own teeth and if their teeth are in need of repair. also if you've had root canal treatment they say after a certain period of time you should have that tooth crowned because you stand a higher chance of losing it.
i've had root canal on 2 bottom molars because i've got reflex sympathetic dystrophy, and the condition started in my mouth where i couldn't eat or drink. even if i had saliva build up the pain would be so excruciating. so the dentist thought maybe by removing the nerve it would ease the pain. it did NOTHING!!!!! lol

R9k is not bad. I was quoted R12k by my dentist. Then he sent me to this fellow in Claremont (who was going to do it) and who was distinctly unfriendly and I was put off by his attutude. First of all I had to wait 90 mins since his receptionist had muddled the appointments, then he took one look in my mouth, prodded about with his shiny probe and said I could come back in about 6 weeks. No x-ray, nothing and when I asked about an x-ray he said that he would decide whether or not it was necessary. I started asking about determining bone density, etc and he walked out of the room. The look into my mouth cost me R 320,00. On the invoice was: infection control, gloves, sterilising, consultation fee, minimum surgery time. I spent 10 mins lying on his chair and 20 seconds being looked at and prodded. Must say the waiting room and surgery were beautifully decorated, plush chairs, nice prints on the wall, nearly new magazines, coffee machine, soft music coming out of the speakers. Anyway, I have not been back since and want it done for much less than R12k.

This is likely the dudes down the hill from me.. thing is if its a private place, in this area.. expect to pay an arm and a leg ;) I wouldn't go to place in this area as i know the quote will be costly.

Can someone PLEASE recommend a dentist in the Western Cape area. I need 6 veneers, and I want to be as happy and satisfied as killadoob. I know dentistry is expensive, and I kind of got my head around 12K for 6 veneers. So after starting to look around and at options, most of the dentists charge roundabout 5000K PER tooth. I really can not afford 30K for 6 teeth. I am hoping that someone could advice and recommend. Much appreciated,
