Cost for sustenance per day.

I could make a salad for a few bucks a pop I'd imagine. Will do that in the future.
Depends on ingredients imo. You can make a basic salad for a few bucks but it gets out of hand fast. e.g. Me shopping for salad ingredient....Mushrooms...need them, olives...totally, feta..healthy, cherry tomatoes...tangy...and pretty soon you're looking at a R125+ salad. Glorious...but not cheap.

Salary/2 = food cost to live.

I like to eat good food, it's fine as some days I literally have just a chocolate bar.

* Definition of "food" may vary

Not judging though...some days what I eat is decidedly not balanced...

@brom: Curious as to why the protein bar? Those things always strike me as evil expensive for what you get...

Helps maintain consistency in my daily calorie intake and helps me to stop binging on chocolates half way through the week. I have a vicious sweet tooth.

But yeah, they are very expensive for what you get. The bars I have are really nice though and have whey protein isolate in them. They're actually R35 each at dischem, so I import them for myself in bulk and get them cheaper.

My daily spend is extremely erratic.

Most days I don't eat breakfast.
Have coffee/tea at work.
Sometimes go out for lunch with a colleague (we alternate paying for the cheque) so anything from 0 - 150
For supper can be anything from R0 - R400 (ranging from eating nothing to going out to a restaurant)

So basically, I am not good at budgeting :/

If I'm feeling cheap:

Breakfast - Wimpy Executive breakfast + an additional egg and hashbrown and mega coffee: ~R105
Lunch - Two colonel burgers plus a regular chips and 1L coke: ~R60
Supper - King Steers burger plus large chips and a 6pack of Hunters Gold: ~R125

So ~R290

If I'm not feeling cheap I'll have my personal chef slap something together. He costs me R40,000 pm so R1,333 per day.

Just kidding, I wouldn't give my personal chef such a poverty spec salary.

That brekkies is way to expensive.

breakfast: 2 eggs, 1 toast
lunch: 1 diy steak sandwich, fruit
dinner: meat + veg, yoghurt/junk

So about R50-R60 also. Once in a while I add a R40 bunny chow.

Because the bread is thin white bread it is a superficial envelope for other food / temporary hunger relief with no impact on energy levels.

My average daily meal plan looks something like this:
Breakfast = R15
Oats + 1/2 Banana + Milk
2 Whole eggs,scrambled
Coffee (Free at work)
Slice of toast with Avo or Peanut Butter

Lunch = R25
Can of tuna or Chicken Breasts
Veg
Whole-wheat pasta/Wrap/Rice

Mid-day snack/Post Workout = R10
Protein Shake +Milk

Supper = R25
Same as lunch (Protein & Carb & some veg or salad)

The hassle of storing and preparing, frankly.

And how much can you possibly save? I'm foregoing lunch at the moment (preparing for Ramadan) so not spending there.

And at R23 bucks or so for an awesome salad, it seems a well enough priced option.

In your OP you said R50/R60 a day. So are three eggs then priced at between R27 and R37 :eek: :p

My SO packs salad for myself and her three times a week (twice with added protein - mostly chicken or tuna- and one lunch just greens) and that costs around R100 for both of us. So it works out to about R 16.67 a salad. So saving you around R6 / day. 22 work weeks a month. R 132 a month.

Myself and the SO spend around R1200 / month on Meat and other basic things for making meal.
Then in between we will probably buy another R500-R700 worth of things. From this we get breakfast, lunch and dinner.

So R1900 / 2 / 30 = R31.67 a day on average.

Sorry for off-topic and no offense intended, but I was under the impression you're non-religious with a Catholic background (ref. Ramadan)?

Breakfast: Glass of warm honeyed milk and 2 Weet-Bix biscuits. Mug of Tea/Coffee.
Lunch: 3 Slices brown bread/plate of rice/pasta with a curry.
Dinner: Same as lunch. 1 or 2 cups of tea during the day.

Probably around R50 per day at most.

R120/day excluding eating out. It's not cheap to eat a healthy high protein diet. That excludes supplements like omega 3, aminos, vitamins, zinplex.

Indeed I am. Doing it alongside a Muslim friend, for no particular reason other than to do it.
