Hi folks

I am looking for an accurate figure of a DSLAM “cost per port”. I found figures from 2003 and earlier, but would like to get more up-to-date information. If you know where I can get this info it will be great (links will even be better :D).

Regards,

RPM

I cant comment on the excact cost-effectivness of the products but there quite a few being sold on http://shopper-search.cnet.com/, just do a search for DSALM. I ain't no expert but from what I can see it works out about 500-700 rand a port for a 48 port DSLAM.

500 - 700 Rand, if that's true and that's so cheap I buy one for Sunset beach as long as someone will installl it before June!

To think your paying R600 pm for line rental...

yeah - we have to find out what causes them to not put ports into those exchanges ..

laziness? greediness? apathy?

multiple choice, more than one choice allowed.. :)

I'll go with option e) All of thee above

My guess is that the ports they mean are on the system that converts the copper ADSL infrastructure to run over the back haul. About June last year Telkom unoffically quoted me R10000-R15000 to install one at my office (the office complex is fibre, and I wanted ADSL so needed a fibre to copper/adsl converter). That was for 1 line.

I may be way off here though

Correct me if i'm wrong, but isnt the whole point of a DSLAM too do just that, convert coper into atm?

Heres a short description i found on how the system works:
Basically, a customers line is provisioned for ADSL by opening up their copper pair to the higher frequencies, and routing the digital data in these frequencies to a DSLAM (DSL Access Multiplexer). The DSLAM converts the DSL signal to ATM packets, which are sent to our Redback servers. The Redback server acts as an ARC does for modem dialup connections. It forwards the authentication request to RADIUS, assigns an IP and DNS to the client, and acts as the customer's PPP gateway to route all TCP/IP traffic onto the Internet.

That quote of 10k was with there standard markup of 1345% and the 15K was for them to do it in this lifetime

AFAIK the DSLAM is on the exchange end, I am talking about on the user end. So the exchange to office was fibre in my case. Anyway this issue has been worked over many times before about how ADSL works (doesn't) with fibre on this forum. Just do a search. :)

rpm - it's like a hay stack in a needle. Everybody knows they exist, and where they are, but it requires all this wierd technology to get actual price. You have to tell the supplier what you want to use it for first. I mean - cmon - is this such a big trade secret. I've made up a ficticious scenario, and I may even get an answer by Friday.

Thanks James - so lets make it R 240 000 for 240 ports. Thats 1000 per port.
Good enough argument on overpricing.

Teklom would pay for the 240 ports in 2 months, then the fibre would be paid off in 1 year, the support + maintenance + training + layoffs + subsidising + software is paid monthly - over 3 years ... that leaves teklom with:
599 * 240 * 10 months * 3 years = 4,3 million over 3 years to cover the cost of the fibre + support stuff. Seems excessive to me for 240 users.

If it helps any, they are using Siemens' DSLAMs. I can get the list price for you if you want, but am only back at the office on Fri. When do you need it (the costs) by? I actually have a feasibility study that i did a while ago on implementing ADSL in a corporate MAN environment that breaks down all the costs for ADSL... You may find it an interesting read.

RPM is doing his representation on Friday. He would need it by Thursday.

oh bugger. no can do - i got my own presentation to prepare for tomorrow (friday) for something totally unrelated :( sorry! Maybe next time - if u need help, give a shout!

Are you sure, I was 99.3% certain that they had a contract with Cisco. Could be wrong of course.
