THE proposed banning of swimming at Sardinia Bay Beach ruffled feathers in the Nelson Mandela Bay council chamber yesterday, when councillors debated the contentious issue.

The DA vehemently opposed the proposal, while the ANC said it was risky to keep the beach open for swimming as it was not easily accessible and had dangerous surf conditions.

The heated discussion, initiated by DA councillor Andrew Whitfield, started after economic development and recreational service executive director Zolile Siswana said in his report to the portfolio committee that the access road leading to the braai spots and clubhouse was constantly covered with sand which had to be removed regularly.

He said the beach had a reputation for drownings and was a breeding ground for criminal activity.

**** sakes, this pisses me off...

Awesome beach, and they want to basically discourage people from going there... It's one of the most beautiful places we have here, and instead of dealing with the problems (life-guards and security, hello?), the ****wits want to pretend the place doesn't exist.

Bah!

Sad if they do.

Spent many a days there when I was growing up.Such a lovely place.

They can leave the road under sand, won't bother anyone.
Same thing happened with the road at hangklip anyway.

The ANC being responsible and conservative and trying to make things safer for other people ... while take AWAY the freedom of movement ... I can't believe it.

This is so ... NOT ... the ANC.

They have probably no funds due to the cANCer tradition and norm of corruption and gravy training.
Bunch of tw@ts.

One of the most beautiful beaches in the country. When I lived in Port Elizabeth it was my favourite place. Car was always broken into though as plenty of bushes for skabengas.

Don't think they want to ban visits here. Just swimming. Kinda makes sense to me if you are going to have trouble getting lifeguards and equipment out there every day! It will probably remain open for beach visits.

Nah, it's more than that. The access road needs to be cleared of beach sand on a regular basis and the metro does not have the money nor the inclination to do so. Without this access road you cannot get to the beach and it will get worse. The current parking lot (as seen on the bottom right of copa's picture) will become part of a sand dune.

Takes effort, must ban!

How is banning swimming gonna reduce criminal activity...

Also true MickeyD.
That part of PE's beach has probably never been used by many a comrade, so they don't really care.
We shouldn't take this lying down.

I'm surprised the DA opposes this. They're usually first in line to ban anything that might be risky. I'm guessing they oppose it just because the ANC is in favour.

Yes, they're behaving just like Australians and Europeans.

Reading the article makes it pretty clear that they are sending the message that the beach is dangerous and problematic in many other ways other than the supposed drownings.

I remember as a kid going to Sardinia bay - There was a food stall, always hundreds of people having a ball of a time, and lifeguards on duty. As a teenager, I was still able to go to the beach and have a piss-up without being in danger.

Here we are now, a couple years later and all of a sudden there are a bunch of problems that stem from nothing more than the failure of the municipality to look after a supposed tourist treasure...

*edit*

Okay, well, to be fair, the sand dune is a bit of an issue, but who the **** shuts down a whole beach because of a sand dune? :D

Am I missing something? If you can't afford to provide lifeguards and can't afford to maintain the road that is constantly being covered with sand surely you could just stop maintaining the place or switch to maintenance levels you can afford, then stick a bunch of "swim at your own risk" signs up, inform folks that they will probably need a 4x4 to get there when they come to whatever passes for a tourism information kiosk down that way and be done with it.

Oh also put some signs up warning about criminal activity.

Banning seems really stupid.

It's Port Elizabeth, a municipality within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro... soon to be the second DA-run metro in South Africa.
Still EC. :P

They do seem to have a huge dune problem, one that might not always have been there.

I'm guessing they are banning people from going there as it's still municipal/metro grounds and therefore anything happening there is on their heads and not the people willing to risk their lives.
