Hi all,

I am seriously considering getting 3G, but I need to be 100% sure I will have reception where I am. The map does indicate I do have 3G coverage, but what can I do/who can I speak to to make 100% sure it will work here?

Thanks in advance

well if u know someone with 3 g , ust let them bring it around and test from where u will be using it.

i dont know if theres another way to test.

Most 3G towers have GSM 900/1800 as well. If you can find out the name of the 3G tower, and you can pick up a strong signal on GSM 900/1800 from the same tower, it is highly likely that 3G will work.

To check how strong your GSM 900/1800 signal is assuming you are getting full bar, cover your phone with as much of your body as possible, wait 10 seconds, and quickly check the bars. If the bars stayed on full bar, your GSM 900/1800 signal is much stronger than full bar. Then the 3G signal from the same tower should be similar barring the extra attenuation through the structure of the building due to the higher frequency. If the signal is dodgy, 3G might be dodgy too.

Alternatively, as Newb-lite said, PM a couple of guys on the forum who has 3G on Vodacom, there should be couple around Centurion. Maybe someone can help you check the signal with their phones or laptops.

Hi LandyMan
You would be well advised to check from your residence before buying. 3G cells breathe (expand and retract), so you may get varying levels of coverage during the day and at night. Do you know anyone who has a 3g phone that you can borrow? If not, drop me a PM and I will see what I can do to assist you... I am in Joburg quite often!

You can rent a 3G phone or data card on the Vodacom network from your nearest CELLUCITY branch.

Spoke to CELLUCITY they offer the datacard with a prepaid no. that you have to load with airtime. The datacard with the software e.t.c R20 per day...

so hire one for a day or so do your typical test e.t.c and also call 155 they have a coverage map diff. to that on there website(vodacom4me.co.za)..

Hi guys, thanks for all the info! Currently I don't know anyone with a 3G phone (cheap b@st@rds :D )

ScrnScrm, I might take you up on your offer soon. I'll be in touch!

Even at R20/day for 7 days and R2.50/Mb, it's not such a bad idea to get a proper idea on coverage / usage / suitability. Say R200 to check suitability of investing a few thousand....

I have to agree there, it could save you a lot of money and hassles in the long run. A week will definately give you an idea of what you can expect.

Even better. You contact your nearest Cellucity outlet and tell them you want to buy a 3G product. They will send a consultant to your place to check if 3G works or not. They can sign you up at your place.......Cellucity EXPECT MORE

You are welcome to mate. One of my colleagues lives in the area so I can get him to make a turn, or I can - next week in Josey.
