I am considering MyWireless (not sure if this is a good idea [V]) but when I use the zone locator I am told that their is no useable coverage. About half a kilometer away (the bottom of my street) has -partual reception. The thing is that I am alot higher than the bottom of my street. So what I am asking is if their is a way I could get reception should I decide to get MyWireless ([V]).

Even if I could get it to work I properly would not go for it - but I think it is always nice to know what your options are.[^]

All that I ask is that you try out a Mac - kilps

Hi, which suburb are you in?

Someone on the forum may live near you to try a test for you

STAY AWAY FROM MYWIRELESS, STAR AWAY FROM SENTECH, GET ADSL, STAY AWAY

Even if it said USEABLE coverage, chances are you'd still struggle to get a decent workable signal

Get the new ADSL HOME package, trust me, for the reliability in a connection for 3 gigs is much better than this shiat

Get a test modem for a few hours from Sentech or NoWire B4Y buy.
It worked for me.

Hi kilps; I've seen too many times that there's no coverage and promptly gone and got entirely usable signal at that site to blindly believe that zone locator site. And I've also seen at a buddy's place where he's a lousy 600m from a tower that it simply doesn't exist for him (ok, that one's a no brainer- sodding great big blocks of flats in the way..), but the point is IMO there's exactly *one* way to know for sure whether it'll work for you: an onsite test ..providing you're within range of course!

So if you're in the general JHB/Midrand area drop me email and we can look to know for definite.

I live in Newlands - the only thing with ADSL is the price and the cap - but from what I have heard from this forum Sentech is just not the way to go - I think I will just wait for the SNO (and hope!)

Go ADSL - if you don't get a contract, you can simply run it on a month by month basis and cancel when something better comes along.

I think all of us that went with Sentech earlier this year will NEVER make the same mistake again of being early adopters of new technology, so even if the SNO miraculouly offers cheaper/better connectivity next year, a wise person would wait a good 6 months to see how it pans out.

In the meantime, unfortunately, it seems it's a case of "better the devil you know" - at least with ADSL, your using proven technology.

The price is just a little more than a Sentech 128, but at least it's usable.
The cap is rotten, no dought about that, but I can tell you one thing, on my Sentech 128 it takes me a week to download 1 gig from overseas anyway !

There is also an almost certain chance of Hellkom lowering ADSL prices or increasing the default cap if competition next year gets too much for them.

The way I see it, a contract free ADSL is the only viable option sadly.

Ah kilps- there're Newlands suburbs in each of the major coverage cities! But I'm going to presume you're in JHB as that's closest to me *g*. You say you're high up- in my travels I've determined that (antenna) height IS your friend (unless you have LOS from ground level, but that's a special case). So, with height, the 4.6km from the Brixton tower I got from a thumbsuck distance calculation (see http://tinyurl.com/4cw46 -I got it from zooming in on the word "Newlands" on the zonelocator until I could select the test option) may well be viable.. hell, I've got a buddy well behind Northcliff corner who has a dish pointed at that tower and it rocks.

And then there's the announcement that there's a Newlands tower going up on the MyWi announcement page- it's left as an exercise to the reader to guess WHICH Newlands they're referring to!

Sorry - I am in Cape Town - right up against the mountain (even cellphone coverage isn't great) - I might get a test modem but I shall properly just wait for the SNO and hope! [:o)]
