CPU bottlenecks

wtf!? how is an AMD hd3870 able to run crysis with 8xAA and max settings??????? that's one insane card then! I call you a liar! (unless you run it at like 640x480 :D)

Dude, why'd you have that as a quote of mine? I never wrote that?

I have a AM2 5200+ with 2GB Ram.
I have the ATI Radeon 3870.

I play Crysis and Crysis Warheads on it at x8(AA) and all graphics settings set to its max.
My CPU doesn't even go to 50% and I use around 1GB ram, my graphics card is not overworked even though the game is massive and demands allot. The game runs smooth and only time the image freezes (slightly - longest time 2 secs) is as a level starts or when graphics settings are changed.
And that right there is impossible unless you run 320x240... 3870 struggles at high detail at 1280x1024 with no AA and no AF... Check you're not referring to FarCry from 2004.

As for bottleneck, could be cluttered registry, fragmented drive, too many process in the background or a combination of all of that.
SuperPI and Prime95 will tell you nothing about anything performance related. A failing dimm would result in BSOD not slow downs.
Check to update to Catalyst 8.10 and keep an eye on temps

Alright, ran Super Pi on both machines. My machine does 21 iterations to 4M in 1min 29 secs. g/f's did the same in 2min 55 secs. Seems to be a prob with her cpu then?

4mil isnt a good pi to check,go for 1mil.
Any juice from Prime?

SuperPi will obviously be faster on the Intel system and proves nothing and as for Prime what is the point of checking for stability when both systems are stock and he is asking about bottlenecking.

At that resolution i doubt you will have bottlenecking as the gpu is doing the most of the work then.

Anyway my 2 cents :)

2 very correct cents.
SuperPi is pretty much optimized for intel and no AMD will even come close with that test.
Prime is for testing an OC's stability in terms of heat and heavy load.
Its possible the CPU is bottlenecking but I really dont think its that.
You could try and raise the OC on it cosidering the 6750 is a 3ghz by default the .2 hardly counts as an OC.
I would raise the OC by a fair bit and see if there is that much of a performance change, be aware that faster CPU == faster gaming.

Gouhan is that you?

The 6750 is 2.6 at stock. So it's a fairly big OC with stock cooling. Anyway, my machine seems to be running all games very nicely, it's my g/f's machine that's struggling. Starting to suspect the PSU more and more actually.

Ooooh Schoolboy error on my part! you are indeed correct, I was thinking E6850 for some reason.
Maybe pop her card in your pc then and see how it goes, that will let you know if its the card. While you are at it pop your card in her pc to test that.
Then throw the AMD cpu away!
After recently switching AMD to Intel the performance difference to me is huge.

Thanks for all the help so far all.

Alright, so we swapped graphics cars last night. With my g/f's 4850 in my PC, I was still able to run Warhammer on max settings with a good FPS. With my 4870 in her machine, her frame rate went up a little but not much. This was on the lowest possible graphics settings that she's been playing with the whole time. We then put Warhammer's gfx up to maximum, and the frame rate didn't drop below what it was when all the settings were on minimum. To me this would indicate that it's not a graphics card issue, but a CPU issue, correct?

I've read that WAR is quite CPU intensive. Apparently minimum CPU speeds required are 2.5ghz but the game only utilizes a single core. My g/f's AMD is 2.6ghz, so maybe an overclock will help a bit?

Overclock or a new cpu.

The 4600+ = 1.7ghz core2 duo

5200+ = 2.2?

Get a 6000+ for her :p

Or there's settings which utilizes less cpu power...maybe like physics or something...sorry I dont know warhammer much.

I have 2 x 1gb of Patriot DDR2 800 RAM at 4-4-4-12.

Ms. BC has 4 x 1gb of DDR2 667 RAM at 5-5-5-15.

ROFL

:D

I'm going to have my own little overclocking adventure. I have no clue what to do but hey who cares. If I blow it I'll be 'forced' into buying a better CPU....and perhaps motherboard :D

I've overclocked by Intel and it's really not hard. Pretty sure you're more technically adept (on computers at least :p ) than me, Alan.

As your fellow hippie Oddball once said " I only ride 'em, I don't know what makes 'em work"

:o

BlueCollar is your gf's pc the AM2? or the old 939?

if it's the 939 then your problem is there... bottleneck = CPU and motherboard.
