CPU choice

hi guys,

my cousin is looking to upgrade his P4 (i know) to a better cpu. now he looked at the AMD Phenom II X4 940 Black Edition and he really liked it. is this a good choice. he'll get mobo by himself.

he's got an 8800gts 640mb, 3 gigs RAM DDR2@800mhz.

is this the right way?

that coupled with a good mobo, a good air cooler(something in the R500 range) and a strong gut (to brave the uber ghz it can pull), and you have yourself a very decent system, with just a little tinkering you can get that cpu to 4ghz with no hassles :D. and now that it's winter, and the ambient temps are dropping, you may even push it to 4.2ghz (which should make that gpu cry for mercy :D).

It should be a nice leap in performance from his p4.

they both great CPU's, but I prefer the AMD hey, it's a better overclocker and IIRC they perform similarly. It's up to him, just make sure he knows what he wants. Also, what application is he planning to use the cpu for?

Also, for a decent Intel Mobo he may have to spend more cash on it (for a mobo that overclocks well). with overclocking in mind, I think the AMD will be simpler to overclock as you can freely change the multiplier, unlike the Intel CPU.

I'll to a little research, just tell me what he wants to do with the cpu

if you look at this review you will see that the Q9400 is a little better at gaming, however, if you look here you'll notice that the 940 @ 3.6 ghz sits with the Q9650 (intel)

Get the phenom2. The money you save on the mother board you can use to get an air cooler. Or more ram. :-)
