Today one of my PCs shut itself down in the BIOS after 5 seconds due to the CPU temperature (about 110'C ) due to thermal paste problems (very long story, but suffice to say it's been sorted after numerous phone calls). Will there be any damage to the CPU, or does it prevent the damage by shutting itself down? It's a Q6600 G0 stepping, not overclocked.

I wouldn't try it again without having it checked. Are the fans going? Could it be a software problem ...

I would think it tries to prevent damage by shutting down, but you can't be sure it did prevent it, so it's a give or take situation ;)

Everything's been sorted out, new paste has been applied and the HSF is connected again. I just want to know whether I should expect any damage to the CPU...

Well, if it starts up and runs, I guess it's fine. Do some CPU benchmarking or burn in tests to see if it is stuffed or fine ;)

So if it boots Windows it's fine? Another quick question, I installed the new CPU and booted into Windows (that was installed with a single-core CPU) and CPU-Z saw the Q6600 as having 1 core. I know Windows was busy installing a lot of drivers for some "multicore CPU" or other while I was doing this, but does it have to install that for CPU-Z to see the Q6600 as a 4-core CPU? And yeah, I wiped Windows eventually because I know it doesn't like big hardware changes...

I'm not sure, but I'd think you'd need the drivers for it. I've never worked on or with a CPU with more than one core, so I can't say for sure.

Make sure you have the latest CPU-Z though and the latest drivers for your CPU ;)

Yeah it was the latest CPU-Z but didn't install any drivers since I planned to nuke Windows in any case... Kan jy my antwoord op die vorige vraag oor die boot Windows in om te sien dat hy fine is, tera? Ek's nou geworry... :(

Lekka WKJ ! When did u get yr quad? U planning 2 oc it a bit?

Thanks xeo! Bought it at PCInternational :)

Of course I'm planning to overclock it :D I'm buying the Striker Extreme and I think I'll get 3.2GHz with that board on stock, what do you think?

That's a great overclock! :) What are the temps like, and did you increase the core voltage? Pardon me asking but I want to get it right the first time ;)
