CPU over temperature error!

Hi guys

I have just purchased a 2600K along with the Asus P8H67-V motherboard.

I installed all of the hardware and made sure that the stock cpu fan was properly clipped in, but when I start the PC it brings up an error after the ASUS motherboard logo screen saying: CPU over temperature error! Press F1 to RUN setup.

I pressed F1, and the BIOS showed the CPU temperature at 92 degrees Celsius! The PC has not even been on for 30 seconds, so I have huge doubt that that is the actual temperature.

I can't boot into my PC at all.

I removed the stock fan, and clipped it back in, the problem persisted. Perhaps this has something to do with the paste?

I would really appreciate your help

Thanks

Are you 100% sure you clipped in the heatsink correctly?
Take note that the arrows on the 4 black clips point in the direction that you loosen it and not in the direction that you tighten it!

Will double check and post results in a bit.

Thanks for the reply :)

They can heat up very quickly. As suggested check that your heatsink is properly seated.

I just removed the heatsink and clipped it in again.. All clips are fully clipped in with each clip fastened in the opposite direction to the arrow.

I started up the PC again, and got a different message above the error: 'New CPU Installed' but below that, the CPU over temperature error. The Temp reading is still sitting between 80 and 95 degrees Celsius. Still won't let me boot into Windows..

Any other thoughts?

Something's definitely not right it should be about 40 degrees or less

Did you use the little pack of goo that comes with it? You need to cover the cpu with it to make it contact with the heatsink properly

I did some looking around and see this is a common problem with Asus motherboards? Well, all of the online discussions where this problem is mentioned, also mention an Asus motherboard..

Is it possible to get refund and choose another Motherboard which doesnt have that problem or at least get them to replace it?

There is no packet of paste that comes with it. As far as I know, the 'goo' is on the cooler.

Not really, I only have access to other Asus motherboards.. So replacing it wouldn't do much good.

I am beginning to think that the paste was not applied correctly to the processor on contact with the fan.. Should I get some new paste and reapply it?

Doesnt hurt to try everything you can to fix it and also it is normally applied in factory so you wouldnt need to add more :D. You did make sure all fans are working and fan doesnt have gap between it and the CPU? If you need new paste go to the same PC shop or order online.

I did have a problem once when I first built my moms PC and found I put the fan housing onto the CPU wrong

I think its a ASUS mobo thing because i also have a ASUS mobo not even 1 week old and i regularly get warning messages that my CPU (i5 2500k) is over heating at 54 and my mobo is at 128C!

Another thing I am wondering about if it is actually at those temperatures or if they false readings, caused by sensors or software? Is there anyway to prove it

no idea man but i also think that it could be false readings, i mean 128C, thats abit 2 hectic for idle state/ watching movies...

I took the CPU fan out yet again. Double, tripple checked. No spaces. All clips clipped in. The fan runs perfectly, but the motherboard still picks up the temp at an immediate 85 degrees, even after it has been off for 30 mins or so. Definitely a software error.

I am going out to buy some new paste tomorrow. Will apply it and hope for the best.

If not, I'll swap the mobo in store and see if the problem comes up again.

Thanks for all the replies :)

No problem keep us posted on what happens :D

If you have access to a temperature probe and meter, you can push the probe around the board to check the temps.

Remember to clean off all the old paste.. preferably with some Isopropyl alcohol.. then watch a few videos on youtube about how best to apply thermal paste.. You should not spread it yourself.. it's best to put a small blob or line (line method) in the center, then clamp the cooler in and let the cooler spread the paste.. no air bubbles this way.

Also, maybe see if there's a bios update for the mobo?
