Hey guys.

I have a new Intel 3.16 Mhz CPU on my new machine but the problem is that it keep running very hot. Like if i play wow it will go up to 100 degrees and stay there. When i am not doing anything on the box it is still sitting at about 50 degrees.
The fan is running but only about 1500 rpm. There was thermal paste on the chip when i installed it.

Do you think i should get another fan?

Any ideas?

A product/model code would be easier to work with. Is it a Core 2 Duo E8500? By the way, 3.16Mhz is slooooow. I think you mean 3.16Ghz? :p

In any case, 50C is abnormal for these chips from what I can tell. A new fan won't do jack. I recommend you re-install the heatsink+fan - sounds like a heatsink that is not properly seated.

Another thing, you sure its °C and not °F?

Haha yeah my first PC, 8086 XT was faster than your PC! 4.77Mhz :D :D :D

Yeh, at 50c the fan should be up to 3000 rpm already, so something is fitted wrong.

If you are using a Wolfdale chip (E8200, E8400, E8500), it could be the app you are using to measure the temperature. Some older temperature monitoring apps are not compatible with these chips. I have a E8400, and tested with three different temp monitoring apps, two displayed an idle temp of 45c, one displayed an idle temp of 30c. According to popular opinion the 30c should be the correct temp. The app that gave the correct temp was the latest version of Hardware Monitor. Can't remember the other two, though.

:eek::eek: omw

anything over 70 degrees is not cool, no pun intended!:p

i have a e6400 2.13ghz that i'm overclocking to 2.8ghz with stock intel cooling and it the max it goes is 54degress after an hour of stress testing

BIOS Setting maybe?

Try resetting your bios to default settings if you don't know how to setup your PC Health Settings (Fan Settings)

I am running it on the new p5Q board from asus and i am using the incororated software.
I will check to see that the fan is socketed correct. I will post feedback tonight

Maybe you plugged the fan power connector into the wrong fan controller, so perhaps you plugs the CPU fan into a case fan slot, could be why the fan is staying @ 1500 rmp...

O.k so i checked the CPU fan. It looked a little loose. so i tried to push it in harder. The fan seems to be very difficult to connect in.
Now the CPU is running at 44 degrees (centigrade).

I have double checked the fan connection and it is correct.

Do you have any links for some fan controlling software?

Edit: I just ran realtemp and its still high (around 50 for both cores)

No Software need dude - let your mobo do what it's supposed to do! go into BIOS, Pc Health settings or whatever your says, and set the option to change fan speeds according to cpu heat.

I have just been through the same as you, Core 2 duo was running a tad warm...I bought a new case instead of messing around. Runs much cooler.

I am using Speedfan as well as real temp - both give different readings. about 7c difference.
