Proposed amendments to the Competition Act come as government tries to drive down the cost of doing business, improve consumer protection, grow the economy and create jobs.
A number of studies have indicated South Africans may be paying a lot more than their counterparts in other countries for services in industries such as banking and telecommunications. This was a concern from a competition policy perspective, Sibanda said.
May?? Why cant people call a spade a spade? We arent maybe paying more we ARE flippin paying more!
South African companies with excellent cost-effective services are not allowed to operate in their own country.
MWEB have a great satellite bandwidth service that is available to every country in Africa - except South Africa itself. One of the best African VOIP services is also South African - and is also barred from providing excellent options to South Africans.
This is all to benefit Telkom, who continue to enjoy unfair and unnecessary protections, at the great expense of South Africa's ability to compete for investment. It also stalls any use of better service options that could be made available tomorrow, were restrictions lifted immediately by Mbeki.
Business badly needs lower cost service options and its time for all protections to be dropped. Telkom is printing money every month while government dilly-dallies and business pays through the high price for this abdication by our leaders.
Many huge deals have been lost to Telkom's stranglehold on this country's economy and it is time for everyone to start asking government when free competition will be allowed.
I got to take my hat off to GVT. Initially Telkom was the subject of heated debate wrt to anti competitive behaviour, high tariffs, profiteering, etc..
So instead of having a Department for each industry they have now gone and thrown the entire economy into 1 basket called the Competition Commission, labeled it "useless" (i.e. lack of resources) and what we saw with ICASA is a repetition of the same process used in the Telkom saga only now labeled "Economical Reform Strategies".
Basically in lamen terms it means that the big boys can milk us for longer. While they spend probally the next 5 years in court battling out these so called "collutions" and "anti-competitive" behaviours we as consumers will inevitably end up paying for it.
And the best part is that after this article the guys in GVT who came up with the GENIUS idea to reform our economy probally got a nice thick bonus package and party. And watch... After every public statement and every court battle good tax payers money will go into the pockets of Politicians and Government Officials.
It will be a great day when one of these useless orginisations actually do something meaningful to combat these monopolies.
They don't have the balls and at the rate that ANC (Pty) Ltd have addressed these types of issues to date makes one wonder about where their allegiance lies, in their pockets or with the people.
Let's see where South African consumers get ripped off as a result of a cartel and/or monopoly
Banking
Cellphones
Telecommunications
All these are significant industries (especially wrt to business wanting to set-up in SA) which require immediate action but the ANC seem to be only interested in lining their own pockets.
