Hey guys - So I'm getting a bit moedeloos here and thought I'd turn to the vets of MBB for help.

Background in a nutshell:

I have a 2750U, I'm on an uncapped axxess 4mb account. I lived close to an exchange now I live further away.
I have had intermittent internet before I moved away from the exchange but wasn't phased as much. just annoyed.
After moving my internet is now a lot worse but only after 6-7PM

When I say worse I mean speed tests time out, or I get Latency Error's on saix speed tests.
It's not always, and sometimes it happens in the mornings as well but definitely rarely and the speed improves to around 0.80 instead of the 3.8 that I usually get.

I have a neighbour who runs the same axxess uncapped account, to the same exchange, through the same telephone line, on the same line speed, and she gets full speeds almost always with no crawling. We live in someones yard and our routers are about 3 meters apart.

Problem:

My internet isn't always crap, telkom has come out once in 8 months of me staying here. Axxess keeps asking for screenshots of the guest account speed tests. I have supplied countless, saix and otherwise, my faults keep getting closed and nobody comes out. Spoke to a manager, he got telkom to come out, but I was on holiday (nobody told me they were coming or confirmed a time) and they came in the middle of the day, when the error doesn't occur. That was 2 months ago. I am still having internet problems.

I have been told its congestion, that i need to downgrade, yet on the property we stay, there is are 2 x 4mb users and 1 x 2mb user and I'm the only one with the problem

What I have done so far:
Updated firmware to latest, reduced HEC errors on the upload, check the cable for damage, replaced the filter, changed passwords on everything and made my wireless invisible, tried new LAN cables, monitored for clients that shouldn't be on, check my internet usage.

Below is my current stats:

I really don't want to downgrade to a 2MB line as it just doesn't make sense to me as the best solution. There has to be something I'm missing http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/images/smilies/frown.gif

Is your router set to ADSL (GDMT) or is it on auto?

And what do you mean by this:

there are 2 x 4mb users and 1 x 2mb user and I'm the only one with the problem

Does each user have their own telkom line or are you all using one line?

The property is a house with 2 flats - the home owner has a 2MB line and account.

The flats each have their own 4MB lines and seperate uncapped accounts.

Unsure if it's on auto but it looks like this on ADSL settings:

G.Dmt Enabled
G.Lite Enabled
T1.413 Enabled
ADSL2 Enabled
AnnexL Enabled
ADSL2+ Enabled
AnnexM Disabled

Capability
Bitswap Enable
SRA Enable

Would be nice to have the router stats from the other 4meg router.

I doubt she will let me fiddle on her router - her brother set it up for her - she moved in about a month after me, but the problem existed before she moved in.

All I know is that her router runs OpenWRT.

Will ask her tonight if I can see her stats - unsure if she knows her own router password.

Sounds similar to an exchange issue I had. PM'd TelkomZA explaining that my latency was going through the roof in the evenings. They kept on checking their side and confirming there was no issue at the exchange. Eventually spoke to Charl. Charl asked me to record tracert data for a few days and to send it through to him. They eventually found that one "rack" (I think that's the right term) was slightly damaged, and that it was only affecting a few users. They eventually got a new one and swapped it out and bam, problem gone.

Maybe your neighbours are connected to different racks on the exchange, and that's why they aren't having a problem?

That's Exchange congestion, best you can do is report it and wait till Telkom upgrades the exchange. Your ISP won't be of much help, unless they manage the line for you. They can report it ,but don't hold your breath for a immediate fix to the issue.

keep a close eye on this page for upgrades and faults.

My 4meg uncapped ADSL pretty much dies after a certain time in the afternoon, and is useless until the next day. What really pisses me off is that Telkom's fault questions are structured in such a way so that you cannot report congestion.. only 'slow upload or download speed' or 'intermittent service.' They downed my line for more than a week after attempting a port reset (which they suggested). Upon fixing it, the reason I was given was that they changed one area, and forgot to change something at the exchange. Now that its up again, its still useless.

I'm going to cancel my ADSL and phone line. Their level of incompetence is staggering, and it is obvious that there are huge divides between their various departments which result in them not communicating effectively. The manner in which they rush to resolve issues even though nothing was actually resolved..

OP ADSL_G.dmt congestion , looks like you are on an old DSLAM .

In most exchanges they have multiple DSLAMs , the very old ones are fed with multiple 2 meg ATM feeds , the newer IMAX DSLAMs are normally fed with fiber .
Telkom moved all the people off the old DSAMs that were on 10 meg on to the IMAX DSLAMs .

Mode: ADSL_G.dmt is the old exchanges.

You area only has max 4Mbps lines and those exchanges are fed with a atm uplink that gets congested very quickly during peak times if there are a lot of people on that dslam.....

That said your line stats look pretty poor too. You are far from the exchange 48dB attenuation is far but should handle 4Mbps easy though if you have good copper but your SNR is low. Too low actually.

I ran 10Mbps on 42dB attenuation and still had like 8dB SNR so yours is a bit lower than it should be in ideal conditions especially if your sync rate gets reduced....

Another thing to note is that you are pushed on interleaved mode to help with errors on the line. That will push your latency up especially on the dslam hop.

Best you can do is to bug Telkom to upgrade the dslam or get the techs to help get your line stats a bit better and then hurry up and wait for a dslam upgrade. The line stats won't help for peak time congestion though.
