Hey guys

I have had a line with Telkom for a realy long time and we always get disconnected and have to restart the modem:mad:... The techies have come over to our house more than 5 times and have concluded the problem is not on our premises. I keep opening new fault reports and they tell me it's fixed but it never is. I have noticed that I get a lot of CRC Errors (about 3 a second) does this mean anything important?

Thanks in advance :D

Why not try to get a new line and see if that resolves the issue.:D

wont work i tried and they want me to pay R700 deposit to just test and add a new line unless he wants to pay R700 for nothing

I can ping www.saix.net and I do know a guy in my area with a stable connection... I just want to add that every time there is a storm we are offline even sometimes when there is a drizzle and no wind.

If I pay R700 do I have to pay more if it is the line and they want to put in a new one? or is R700 for the whole deal?

In short, CRC errors are just another indication of noise on the line. If a packet needs to be resent all the time because its missing parts of the package you should see higher than normal usage than if you were using a connection that was not giving you CRC errors. The only way Telkom could fix this problem is to look at the noise levels on your line, and replace it if needs be.

Okay I'm going to call them and let them know about the noise on the line and see if they can send someone to check it out, thanks for the help!:)

It sounds like your line is being exposed to moisture.

If you have a box on a pole outside, it might not be insulated properly.
I used to have similar problem, one time the box got loaded with ants - which were hiding from rain - and this caused major problems.

am I allowed to check the box myself or do I need to get a telkom guy down?

You need to get a telkom guy... but if you happen to find the box open, say by force of a prybar then there is nothing to stop you taking a look inside.

Your best bet is to completely rewire the phone lines yourself right up to the line between the phone pole & your house.

Don't touch the box itself under any circumstances.

Then keep shouting at Telkom that you rewired the whole thing and clearly the problem is on their side. If you're lucky they'll listen eventually. :o

Or take a telkom techie out for dinner and tell him your tale of woe? Maybe he'll be inclined to assist you seeing you paid for the dinner etc.

it does sound like there is a worn part of your line that is getting exposed to the elements and causes your line to go haywire....

An easy way to check would be to see the router's signal quality (SNR, etc statistics). There are certain levels that are tolerable that you need to be within to achieve a quality connection.

You can then have something concrete to tell the techie involved.
