Create iCloud

hi, I have a Apple laptop and I want to create a new iCloud email and apple account.
Why is it asking me for my cellphone number? This account won’t be linked to a cellphone!
I just want to setup the laptop so I. An have iCloud email and download apps surely it’s got to be easy?

If you setup your Mac without an Apple ID, you'll miss out on most of the features plus you can't download apps from the App Store without it.

So not sure what u asking about..

1. Sounds like the user name.. this is such that it uses the same username password combo as the iCloud account. I don’t use it and instead use a local username/password combo..

2. Post user set up you can login to an existing iCloud account to use with your Mac or create a new one. This gives you access to App Store, iCloud Drive and sync services.. if you use your iCloud acc as username on machine, this step is skipped.

Hi Kate, the reason it asks for your cellphone number is it will send an SMS with a one time pin to that number when you log in from a new device for security purposes.
