My wife just came to me with a quote for a creche / daycare centre.
2 000 a month!!! + Registration costs. Damn Private Highschools are cheaper than this...
Does any of you know if this is the norm? If it is, Im going to tell her to quit her job. no way I can pay 2K a month for something I have less faith in than telkom. I would much rather pay her 2k a month, and she can be at home.

all input welcome!

well, it all depends on which area you are

the more "richer" suburbs charge exorbitant prices.

I have my own school, and my fees are R700/R750 respectively for the new year

I know of quite a few schools that are about R800-R1000.

R1000 sounds about right, we paid R850, after getting some discount for the twins...:D

Ok this school is in northcliff (which may explain it)
I am in Northriding, so i guess i will search a little closer.

Name of the said school?

EDIT: And daycare centres are quite expensive. How old is the little one?

We have a huge antipathy towards daycare/creches. We are really hoping that my wife can be home in those early years, finances permitting - I don't have the best job in the world but we're managing so far. There are a lot of studies showing how detrimental they are to young children's health and development. There was a well respected creche here in Somerset West recently got exposed that they were giving drugs to the children to quieten them down during the day. If you can manage with the wife at home, you should really consider it, the children will benefit hugely.

There are creches that have shady practices going on but there are also ones that are capable of stimulating your child's learning and helping them develop their socializing skills. There is a very well known one in fourways that is pretty shady ;) But by the amount of children that go there you wouldn't know it:(

Not all of them.

You do get the good ones, but they're like needles in a haystack...

The little one will get born 15 January if all goes well. then she will be with mom at home for 4 months. After that, mom wants to find a creche.

I really like the idea of having her at home with our child. I do not like the idea of a creche. How do you trust some one you do not know with your 1st child?

*Edit* Oh and the 2000 a month school is let them grow or something like that.

Yeah i agree. I was asking because they charge more for the little ones(as they require more care).
(I know a few in the area, or rather the GF does and she taught at a few of them so she may be able to give you some additional feedback :D )

EDIT: Where is it situated..? On 14th?

The same way you trust the doters and nurses at the hospital, and the teachers later on, and the fiends parents when they have a sleep over... begrudgingly..:)

Well docters and registered teachers study for years before hand. In many cases creche teachers are house wifes that wanted to work. I know a couple and they are all 40+ and never worked before.
sigh. At least I still have 5 - 6 months to make a plan

I agree with this, hence why I started my own school.

Actually, the school is to help cover some needed expenses. And I decided from the outset I am not going big. about 15 kiddies.

A good way to go school hunting: drive around in suburbs looking for places that look like schools, some don't have sigh boards, but the tell tale sounds of kiddies playing or more than 1 playground toy will be a dead give-away. Pitch up without an appointment.

that way you will get a better idea of what hings normally look like in the run of the day. most schools prefer appointments and then make sure school and kids are extra well-behaved for that time. teacher also get warned beforehand, and cleaner must make sure everything is spickerish. But they'll still allow you in without an appointment

point taken crafty, but I am inherently distrustful when it comes to people and my kids, rather safe than sorry i say. I had a huge issue with a hospital once, my kid was not treated well at all.

things to look out for at nursery school/daycare/creche:

how many teacher per children in one class.
what does bathroom look/smell like
what does sandpit look like (dirty and full of leaves compared to clean with a cover)\
ask to see the kitchen/menu
ask to see daily routine (and check up with older kids what they did)
for babies: ask if they will be willing to keep book of how baby was during the day. (it doesn't require a lot of time)

Not to start a gender war, but it sounds like your wife wants to go back to work.

I can imagine leaving one's child behind every day must be tough, but the flipside is that it must be hard for professional women who become stay-at-home mums to not have the normal intellectual and career related stimulation they had before their child was born.
