creche/daycare

The company that I work for has several creche's. Currently we pay about R750.00 but next year will be paying R1700 (he will be going to a different creche). He gets breakfast and lunch. Every month we have to buy box of tissues and a paper towel roll. We send snacks - fruit / yogurt etc.

When I called around northriding creches...it was ridiculous.
The price was around R1800 and you have to send lunch and snacks

My twins go to a Monstossori (Think I spelled it correctly) and it cost R1.5 per child! And then you still have to send lunch with them.

this is the norm for all montesorri schools. none of them provide meals, and all of them are expensive

I think that they should have seperate pricing per age group

my pricing is the same for 0-2 years, as they are more work. 3-5 years then have a different, cheaper price.

but then again, some schools might increase fees for gr 0 (6years) saying it is a crucial age, and getting them school ready is a lot of work ;)

I wish we had daycare centres with webcams so parents can check in on their kids any time of the day.

That is the best idea I've heard so far. I would feel safe sending my daughter to a school with webcams. They should actually make it law. Imagine how the teachers will treat your child if they know the parrents are watching!

Our neighbours are going to start one. Do they need to be registered?

In the past if it was under a certain number of kids you didnt need to register....I think that it has changed....Rather register, its safer that way.

if they have 6 kids or less, they do not (yet) have to register. as soon as they go over, they have to register...cost about R10 000+ and they also have to get health inspector to come inspect premises (after school's started).

But they have to have all direct neighbours' permission before they are allowed to start a school

We paid R1750 at a preprimary school in Randpark Ridge. Yes it's a bit pricey but I had full faith in their childcare abilities and school / play school structure. As I was not in a position to stay home with the little one I was happy to pay a bit extra so that I can have piece of mind when she is at school.

R2000 is not that excessive. Yes some schools do charge closer to R1000 and they are in NO way inferior (when we lived in Melville my daughter went to Melville PrePrimary at R850 per month and man that was an awesome school - I have yet to come across such dedicated teachers). Unfortunately we couldnt find a school in the same price range that I felt comfortable with. If you are interested (I see you are in Northriding) pm me and I'll give you the details.

The daycare that I worked for was about R2500 a month. Not that Im saying anything but I dont think those babies were treated with a lot of love as they were mostly found laying in the cot. I will never send my child to a day care I'll rather have a care giver at home. The biggest let down is the fact that the children suffer from poor language development and bad muscle tone. The thing that I found with children spending the whole day at a creche is that there really is very little bond between child and parent.

all input welcome!

well, i'll look after them for you and bring the price down to R1800.
They will be under my supervision 24/7! I guarantee it.
please do note that I work in a Metal Refinery, but I have smaller helmets as well.

I think it will be the best alternative until your child turns three then send him to Northcliff nursery school. I think that its one of the best schools in joburg and only half day. It is also very child centred.

yes, schools differ. some of them are just there to make money, but there are quite a few that actually do spend a lot of time with the children and help them develop.

But I would have to agree, it is better to try and spend at least the first 2 or 3 years with your kid before sending them off to school. At least that way, your baby won't get sick as often as when they are at school.

But then again, they will be behind with certain developments (if the stay at home with maid) eg. social skills like sharing/taking turns; language development; and fine motor skills.

If, however, you are lucky enough to be able to afford an au pair (and she does a decent job), there should not be a problem like this. In fact, they should be a bit more advanced in their development.
