Credit Card payment on website?

Howsit Guys, my first post relating to this topic!

I have been conscripted by my mom to help her design a website to sell her "art lesson guides" (for teachers)... my question is of payment...

How does one implement a credit card payment facility on a website?

I would imagen it would work through a bank and there would be fee's...

so suggestions, comments etc.

My advice would be to go with http://www.netcash.co.za, simply because they don't require you to have your own merchant account with a bank.

But, if this is a new venture, why not just do offline payments where they email/fax a proof of payment to you? It will save you a lot in fees, and you can always add credit cards into the mix once your mom's business has grown enough to justify it.

As I have some of experiance in this field, problably your best bet would be to talk to somebody like MWeb, Virtual Card Solutions etc. They host the "Payment Page" for you as well as the shopping cart if you want to and they have all the links into the bank already.

These 2 are linked into FNB though but that should not matter to your mom.

Sounds interesting, does anyone know a ball park figure of doing all the payment handling (gateway), shopping cart (customisable) & merchant account costs. I may be motioning into something in this area, currently in the design stages at the moment

+1, I came here to ask exactly the same question
I looked at Mwebs Safeshop and its like R400 a month which is crazy for what I would use it for. Ive seen one before that gets a % of each transaction rather than a monthly fee, but for the life of me cant remember its name :-/

Stay away from setcom and MWEB

If you want to process credit cards on your website you would need:

1) Merchant Account with the Bank (Payment gateway might help to set this up for you)
2) Dedicated IP address that your website runs on (see 3.)
3) SSL Certificate from someone like Thawte that have to run on a dedicated IP

After you've built your website according to the guidelines set out by the bank to comply with everything, they need to evaluate your stuff before giving you the merchant account.

I won't recommend a payment gateway that redirects from your site to the payment gateway site and then, upon success, redirect back to your site with the "authorization" for you to capture on your side purely because people are idiots and sometimes close the browser before the redirection to your site is complete. Having you have to manually check your payment gateway account to see if you did get the money in for an order that appeared to be abandoned.

You also might want to think of fraud as well, I would highly recommend paygate.co.za as a payment gateway. Fraud can bring you down.

Might also want to consider posting the items instead of delivering online. You don't want your mom's stuff to be pirated. There's some ebook protection companies on the web that allows you to track and lock your PDF's very easily. Almost works like Steam (sort of)
