Crematorium will heat local swimming pool

A council is proposing to save money – and combat global warming – by heating a leisure centre and swimming pool using heat generated by the crematorium next door.

According to the Guardian, Redditch Coulcil in Worcestershire says it can save £14,500 a year by warming its new Abbey Stadium sports centre with heat from the crematorium’s incinerators that would otherwise be lost.

The council, which says it is the first project of its kind in the UK, is holding briefings later this week with faith groups, funeral directors and members of the public to discuss the scheme.

But some local people are concerned. Simon Thomas, of Thomas Brothers Funeral Directors, said: “I don’t know how comfortable people would feel about the swimming pool being heated due to the death of a loved one, I think it’s a bit strange and eerie.”

Council leader Carole Gandy defended the plans, saying it would save money and energy. “I’d much rather use the energy rather than just see it going out of the chimney and heating the sky. It will make absolutely no difference to the people who are using the crematorium for services.”“It’s only a proposal at the moment but personally I’m supportive of it because I think it will save the authority money and, in the long-term, save energy which is what we’re all being told we should do.”

Gordon Hull, from the Federation of Burial and Crematorium Authorities, said: “From an environmental view it makes sense.”

Yip, no problem with it.

It could only be an issue because they made it public.
If they kept quite, no one would have noticed a difference.
 
Guess if you prefer a hot pool you can go on a shooting rampage a few days before you want to swim :)
 
A few datacenters is Europe are using the waste heat generated by servers to heat pools and homes in winter.
 
My company designs and builds incinerators. People in this country don't want to use the waste heat anyway.

I think IBM specialises in this technology, well yes this would be fine, it likely comes from all the pornography stored on them, however using actual people, sounds like something that the Nazis wouldn't even think of doing. It is still and always should be the property of the living person as to what happens to his or her body, regardless of whatever, what matters is not only what happens after the person has passed but the rights and mental assurance(irrespective if it was well reasoned or not), of the person before they die just as well, not only this but the good knowleadge that every body will be treated with these rights just as well.

No, not really. It takes a very large amount of heat to cremate a body, and most of the heat inside the crematorium is lost. It's the excess heat that they want to use. Your body is filled with fluid, and is going to evaporate more than burn. I suspect that you're going to contribute really little to the heat of the pool.
 
Another incremental eclipse of the transcendant meaning of our humanity, in my view.

Of course our bodies are just matter. But WE aren't only matter. When we see ourselves as only bodies we quickly lose respect for humanity, and people become just another utility. This is mild stuff, but once you grant the principle that people are just things, only horror lie ahead when the full ramifications are worked out by the next tyrant, who will of course be ruthlessly consistent in his logic.

Our humanity is safer when we profoundly respect human bodies, even when they're dead. That's why we call the morgue rather than Pikitup when someone dies. Of course this isn't enough - we need to recover the whole philosophical and moral landscape that gives sense and meaning to our lives. And that's a transcendant truth.

I do not have an issue with this. It is our souls which move on to greener pastures (hopefully) once our bodies have expired. It will be done in a respectful manor. It is a solution, not the final solution.

I read about this idea and the anticipated backlash on moral grounds. However it has been given the green light.
