CSA domestic shakeup plan: Leap or plunge?

Cape Town - A middle ground ... between what is almost undeniably, in this turbulent economic and socio-political climate, a rock and a hard place for Cricket South Africa.
That was my own wish, on immediate thought, when it became known over the last few days that cricket’s controlling body in the country intends quite radically reshaping - though sceptics might brand it a reinvention of the wheel - the labouring domestic first-class set-up from the end of next season.
In what is being touted by CEO Thabang Moroe as a key cash-saving device at a time when CSA are haemorrhaging money (revised loss expectations of some R350-million have been reported for the next four-year period), their board has given the green light for a return to a provincial-based, 12-team model from the current six-team senior franchise system.

India has a nice domestic competition structure.

The premier first-class tournament Ranji Trophy will now have four groups Elite Group – A and B, Group C and Plate Group. Elite Group – A and B will have nine teams each, Group C will comprise of 10 teams and the debutants will form the Plate Group. As far as qualification for the knockouts is concerned – five teams from Elite Group, two from Group C and one from Plate will move to the next round. This is the same format that will be followed for the 50-overs Vijay Hazare Trophy.

All team compete for the tittle but teams are split into group. Bottom team in each group is replace by the top team in the group below next season. It's still strength vs strength but a team from lower group with good administrator has a chance to move in to the elite group.
 
Given our specific circumstance ( have to have quotas no way around it in the current political climate) expanding to more teams makes perfect sense. Too many of our talented youngsters are sitting on benches or playing semi pro cricket when they should be developing.
 
South African board and players' body on collision course over domestic revamp plans
A showdown is looming between Cricket South Africa and South African Cricketers' Association (SACA). CSA held meetings over the weekend and has announced that its board has approved plans to restructure domestic cricket as a response to a dire financial situation. But SACA has complained that it has been kept in the dark on the potential changes, which could cost 70 professional cricketers their jobs.

CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe announced the planned austerity measures after two days of meetings to discuss the body's financial standing. In October, loss projections stood at R654 million [approx. USD 47 million], according to a report CSA had submitted to a parliamentary sports portfolio committee, and Moroe said that the amount had come down to R350 million [approx. USD 25 million] because of the proposed revamp.

But SACA says that it has been offered no clarity on the details of CSA's financial position, and how the challenges ahead will be dealt with.

Putting all their eggs in one basket?

This is a recipe for disaster.
 
Amla fails again for the cobras. Only thing in his favor is reeza also keeps failing. Personally I would rather leave both home and take kyle verryne as the backup batsman/keeper.

Rassie can always open if anything happens to aiden or qdk.

Unfortunately the smaller cricket nations really have no choice. They only make money on international tours when england,india or aus visit.

So their own 20/20 league is really the only option.
 
Amla failed again, only 4 in his last game before squad announcement. Cobras managed to beat the knights
 
Really tough call for the selectors to make. Hash is that kind of player who just needs one crisp cover drive to the boundary to find his form but it's just not coming. I still think he should be on the plane to England but can understand if he doesn't crack the nod.

Hashim Amla is an elite cricket player.
Not only in SA but he is among the best in the world. And he will go down as an all time great.
Lets be honest, only Virat Kohli really stands above him in terms of numbers in this era. That's some club to belong to.

Your're not wrong that he's probably just one cover drive away from form. And Amla on form is a scary thought for opposition teams.

To put it another way: Ask any selector in the world if they would pick Hashim Amla in their team if he is both fit and available. There is only one answer: "Yes! Yes! N. B. Yes! "

No doubt, CSA is in close consultation with him. But ultimately, I think that the only person that can decide whether he goes to the world cup or not is Hashim himself.

If he is named in the squad tomorrow (I beleive without a doubt that he will be named), know with full confidence that Hashim knows that he can do the job required of him.

Also think back to the role that Sachin played for india in 2011. In 2010 he played only 2 ODIs but was selected for the WC.
He didn't score a ton every game, but his role in the dressing room and calm on the field has been credited as a major factor in them winning the tourney.

Tendulkar's form while not being at his best had not reached the levels of the current amla nor had he been spilling catches every second game as the current amla is doing.

Lots of former players have left him out of their squad so the opinion that all selectors would be pick him doesn't hold water.

Also numbers are selective. Amla's numbers overall are great but his knockout game numbers are dismal.

Taking the current Amla to the world cup is a mistake. The current amla is not contributing with the bat and is a liability in the field.
 
Problem is the squad is only 15 players, if the squad was 17 or 20 Amla was a no brainier but taking him over Makram isn't the right call especially with the future in mind. Sometimes experience is overrated.
 
Besides the starting 11 I assume we will take an extra spinner, fast bowler, batsmen and all rounder.

Assuming the starting 11 is the following

1. Decock 2. Markram 3. Van der Dussen 4. Du Plessis 5. Miller 6. Pretorius 7. Phehlukwayo 8. Steyn 9. Radaba 10.Ngidi 11. Tahir

I guess it is a toss up between Makram, Van der Dussen, Amal and Hendricks.
 
They cannot surely be taking amla.. I would replace pretorius with philander
