5 days at 80 overs = 400 overs.
4 days at 110 overs = 440 overs and light is not a factor.

80 overs is when you may change the ball. A five day game is usually 90 overs per day. So a maximum of 450 overs.

Would be quite easy to get in 110 over days for the day/night fixture -- just make each session 2.5 hours long instead of 2 hours.

By means of example, the top tier of club cricket here in Cape Town is a two-day format (traditionally, day 1 on the first Saturday and day 2 on the following Saturday). We have three 2.5 hour sessions (10:00-12:30, 13:10-15:40, 16:00-18:30) and are expected to average 16 overs per hour for a minimum of 120 overs in the day (points deductions for teams that don't). If one uses the same session lengths, but with the 15 overs per hour rate that the ICC prescribes for Test cricket, one can fit in 112 overs per day, so 448 overs over 4 days. Given that a 5 day Test is 90 overs per day (so 450 overs over 5 days), it's definitely doable to fit the same amount of cricket in 4 days that is currently accommodated in 5.

The one aspect of the game that will potentially be different is the follow-on: in a 4 day game, it can be enforced if the lead is 150 or greater, as opposed to 200 or greater for a 5 day game.

Ben Stokes, England's Test vice-captain, has been arrested after an incident in Bristol during the early hours of Monday morning. Stokes spent the night in prison but was released without charge. His team-mate Alex Hales was also present and both have been suspended for Wednesday's ODI against West Indies.

The incident happened after England's victory during the third ODI against West Indies on Sunday, in which Stokes scored 73. Somerset and Avon police confirmed that a 26-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of causing actual bodily harm - an offence which carries a maximum prison sentence of five years - while another man was taken to hospital with facial injuries.

Lewis, Joseph denied by England's late DLS dash

England 258 for 5 (Roy 84, Moeen 48*, Joseph 5-56) beat West Indies 356 for 5 (Lewis 176*, Holder 77, Woakes 3-71) by six runs (DLS method)

Such a pity. Windies deserved that win. :(

A very rare great knock from a West Indian in the last 20 years.

There are signs that the Windies are getting back to being serious and committed in their cricket.

Their game has been killed in recent years by politics and in-fighting. Good players have been sidelined because of this. It has also stifled new potential from coming through the ranks into their A sides.

There is also consistency in their young captain.

At last, there is some hope.

Consequently, I am quietly positive that these stand-out performances will become more commonplace in their games.

Encore! :)

I think last year's U19 World Cup Win inspired their self belief.

Sri Lanka 419 & 138
Pakistan 422 & 114

Sri Lanka won by 21 runs

Herath 6/43 did the job. So the only question that remains is whether there was match fixing in this or was it just that sort day 5 pitch that caused the rot?

Ireland confirm Pakistan as first Test opponents
http://www.espncricinfo.com/story/_/id/20999394/ireland-confirm-pakistan-first-test-opponents

Ireland's first Test match will be against Pakistan in May 2018 after the two countries came to an agreement during the ICC meetings in Auckland this week.

Ireland, along with Afghanistan, were elevated to Test status earlier this year.

"We are excited to welcome Pakistan to Ireland for our inaugural Test match next year," CEO Warren Deutrom said. "It has been our wish to make our Test debut in front of our own fans within 12 months of becoming a Test nation, and against a big team, so I'm delighted."

Pakistan's trip to Ireland will come before their two-Test tour of England which begins in late May. The date and location for the Ireland match will be confirmed in the coming months.

"There is a lot of work to do from now to ensure that it will be an occasion to remember but we, and I'm sure our players and fans, can't wait to rise to it," Deutrom said.

"We would like to thank the Pakistan Cricket Board most sincerely for agreeing to be our first opponent in Test cricket, the Pakistan team has been a regular visitor to our shores in recent years, and their agreement to be our opponent on this important occasion for Irish cricket is further evidence of their terrific support."

Bangladesh were the previous team to join the Test ranks when they played their first match against India in November 2000.

"Test cricket is the pinnacle of our sport and I know how much this game will mean to not only the players but all involved with Irish cricket. It'll be another step on what has been an incredible journey for our sport in a relatively short passage of time," William Porterfield, the Ireland captain, said.

"It's sure to be an incredible and emotional experience for all involved. I know how much this will mean to all the players and just how much we all will forward to our dream of being Test cricketers realised. I'm certain there will be an incredible atmosphere from both sets of fans who will be keen to witness a piece of history."

South Africa to play Zimbabwe in inaugural four-day Test

Despite resistance from the MCC and its cricket committee, the ICC Board on Friday approved a "trial" of four-day Test cricket, with South Africa and Zimbabwe playing the first official game of the new format on Boxing Day. The trial is scheduled to run through until the 2019 World Cup, although participation in it is not mandatory.

This decision was taken in Auckland, where the ICC had also given an in-principle agreement to a Test championship to bring context back into the world game. While most of those matches will take place over five days, ICC chief executive David Richardson felt the four-day format can be quite helpful to the lower-ranked nations and the two newest Full Members Afghanistan and Ireland.

4 days is fine when it's a Goliath v Minnow. 5 days should be standard for top teams such as England, Australia, South Africa and India competing against each other.

Moot decision though to make it a 4 day game if playing the lesser sides. So what if a match against Bangladesh takes 3 days. So be it. You got it done within 4 days no need to change the rules. Test match cricket should be 5 days no matter who plays.

If you do play a weaker team like we did against Bang, then go and score 650 or 700 FFS, that makes is worthwhile, more than the 450 and declare crap

If I interpreted the article I posted above correctly, it appears that the ICC shares your viewpoint. :)
