Hosts South Africa received a media hammering Monday after a shock early exit from the ICC Champions Trophy tournament.

The Proteas fell by 22 runs Sunday to surprise packets England, their second loss in three Group B matches at the second most important national team one-day tournament after the World Cup.

A bowling outfit led by speedster Dale Steyn that conceded 856 runs in three outings bore the brunt of the criticism as a team ranked number one in the world once again flopped in a major competition.

"The home team lost this match with the ball through one of the poorer bowling displays produced by them in recent years," said the Johannesburg Star under the headline "England break SA hearts".

"It was good wicket for batting certainly, and winning the toss was important, but the kind of dross served up by the bowlers would have made it easy for the local B team, never mind international batsmen."

The Star did not spare the batsmen either apart from captain courageous Graeme Smith, whose career-best 141 kept the Proteas in with a chance until his departure triggered a closing-overs collapse.

"Where England made judicious use of the short boundary on the eastern side of the ground, only once did a South African player manage to clear the rope in that area of the field."

Business Day said top teams are there to be shot at and very few underdogs can resist the temptation to come out swinging in the hope of landing a knockout punch early on.

"That South Africa bowled poorly is not in dispute. What they need to address is why. Were they due a bad day anyway or was there a problem with preparation?

"If they stumbled and lost their collective rhythm because they were distracted by the fearless England approach, there may be a problem because every team will play like that now.

The Citizen said it has once again become abundantly clear the South Africa and showpiece tournaments do not mix despite a magnificent innings from Smith at SuperSport Park 40 kilometres north of Johannesburg.

"As with the 2003 World Cup, the South African public will have to stomach the fact that they have to support the tournament without their favourite team now.

"While the Proteas will continue wearing tags labelled "chokers" around their necks, it must be said that this was not a mere choke on a bite of apple.

"Instead, England strangled them like a hit man equipped with a wire after producing a splendid batting effort when Andrew Strauss won an admittedly vital toss."

England made 323-8 and South Africa 301-9 in their alloted 50 overs and the winners became the first qualifiers for the semi-finals of a tournament offering a two million dollar first prize.

Looks like Biff was out there on his own this time. :(

Lack of match fitness and indiscipline cost us dearly.

I am still deep in mourning! :p

I almost felt like crying after the match.

I also commented on the few sixes we scored in this tournament in the other thread.

England made 12 to our 2 (72 runs vs 12 runs).

The irony is they've never looked fitter physically, did you see how much fitter Kallis is?

Hope we kick the Poms in the Test/ODI series later. After KP, Strauss is now on my new Eng hate list. What happened to cricket being a gentleman's game?

SA has no mental strength.

I think this is a huge fallacy perpetrated lately. In the exits recently its been more a case of poor bowling or batting.. in this tournament it was more the bowling going completely wrong, in the 2nd match they came right slightly. Lets just hope they fix it and prepare for the 2010 world twenty20 in the Caribbean.

2ndly.. I was chatting to my brother the other day about bowling, batting and twenty20 cricket's impact on the 50over game. If you remember when the shorter version came out all of a sudden HUGE scores seemed to come easily yet these days it seems 350 is hard to get. Why?? well the bowlers acted a bit emo at first but since about 3? yrs ago and with hall in particular he started showing that bowlers are not exactly without tricks combo'd with better responsive field placing. Since then unless your lineup is basically bland, boring or just plain bad its hard for teams to score as high as when it initially started off.

i.e. Twenty20 has made the 50over game a heck of a lot harder than ever before. Its interesting to see how long before more teams carry this thru to tests which have retained some of the boring monotonous game play.

Yeah, amazing! Both Jakes and Biff are looking really good, especially Jakes who must have done some serious off season work in the gym.

The English List of Contempt:

1. Strauss
2. KP
3. Anderson
4. Sidebottom (cut your hair, dude!)
5. Broad (looks like a real girl :D)

Dude you support your team through thick and thin.

+1 ... the mark of a true supporter

Time to change the Queen song to:

We are the chokers - my friends
And we'll keep on succumbing
Till the end
We are the chokers
We are the chokers
No time for winners
'Cause we are the chokers of the World

This time they did not choke, they gave up before that.
A win would not have ensured progression. Because of their poor run rate it would still have depended on other results, but according to AB they were just going for a win. Not a huge win, one that will ensure that they would stay in the tournament. In that way they were not relying on themselves winning but on other teams failing.
It is like Bafana, a 0-0 draw is a win for them because they did not conceded a goal. Some absurd thinking is going on in the teams.

you guys should stop expecting something from the proteas when it comes to tournaments. i find since taking that stance my blood pressure has remained fairly well behaved.

another thing is how the proteas always try to leave the run chase to the end (to the likes of Albie). In those middle overs we still tend to be too conservative and it just never seems we put the opposing captain under pressure to change his game plan.

damn right. That's why I'd rather watch IPL and the ashes. I know the proteas will disappoint me if I expect them to win
