Cricket world cup discussion thread

I think its time we put this heartbreaking loss behind us,extract positives and move on.
How do you feel about the Proteas going into the next game. Are we going to back our boys till the very end or whine about today.
I hope they strangle the opposition in the next match.

Wasn't really heartbreaking for me. I'm glad that the match exposed a few weaknesses now, so that it can be worked on before the knockout phase.

For instance the shot that JP got out to was more of a nothing shot. It's great to get 40 off 14 balls after AB and Hashim laid a good platform, but how will you perform when you're really needed? The guys need to learn to take the game by the scruff of the neck - more often than not, plodding around actually builds up pressure.

Another thing - I'm not sure if they even practice pressure scenarios? Like being 8 down, with one batsman and the last two tailenders, and 50 needed off 24 balls. You can field 11 squad members and give the bowlers turns to be the tailenders, while rotating batsmen after each scenario.

I think we should start with the lower order.. let them slog until they get out.

Bummer game today.

Sure our batting wasn't up to the mark, but it was a tough pitch to bat on.

I would say the main reason we lost is that Smith let the English off the hook after the first three wickets.

I still think we have a very good chance against India and the rest of the tournament.

The likes of Boucher,Albie and Kemp would not have choked. There is no spine in our lower order, if Amla or AB are not holding the team together then everybody else is failing miserably.

tsotsobe please. dont talk about botha tsotsobe please. cricket is for all gentlemen not white gentlemen only

Tsotsobe is not a spinner, as a result he was not included for spinning pitches. Why is this so difficult to understand? Why do you have a problem seeing beyond colour? Get your chip off your shoulder and realise it is in the best interests of the team.

Dude don't get sucked into these race or colours issues, it's cricket. If some people want to live in that kind of world let them and feed the them bud :D.

Disappointing game. Smith & Kallis really need to hit some form for us. We have the current number 1 & 2 batsmen in the world but we can't keep relying on them. Bowling & fielding is perfect. Batting needs to improve abit. I still think we have a good chance to win it. Tough game against India though. And to think that Pakistan is the only team that has advanced to date is weird. They are dark-horses. So are Australia.

Good for the competition though... England need to be in the next round IMO.

Tsotsobe deserves to be selected on merit and merit alone. It's demeaning suggesting he should be selected because it's PC!!! And had Tahir and Peterson not been taking wickets he would be in. We suddenly have a wealth of talent where the toughest job for the coaching staff is who to leave out. Botha is out and personally I don't ever seeing him returning, not as long as Tahir and Peterson are taking wickets. Morkel and Steyn are 2 of the worlds premier fast bowlers so you not going to leave them out either. Who do you drop for Tsotsobe??? Spare a thought also for Wayne Parnell. Maybe he'll get a run against Ireland or Bangladesh but only if SA beat India on Saturday cause right now we teetering..

Are we in the dictionary yet? choke:breathe with great difficulty, as when experiencing a strong emotion; "She choked with emotion when she spoke about her deceased husband" 2: "the SA cricket team choked yet again"

No, but we are in Wikipedia... :D
South Africa national cricket team
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia South Africa

The South African national cricket team, also known as The Proteas (formerly known as The Springboks) are a national cricket team representing South Africa. They are administrated by Cricket South Africa.

South Africa is a full member of the International Cricket Council with Test and One Day International status. Through the mid-nineties to the present, the Proteas have been labeled as the archetypal chokers in international cricket, especially due to their not winning a Cricket world cup even after being one of the top favorites and their general inability to win the big matches on the big occasions.[4][5]

As of 29 December 2010, the South African team has played 357 Test matches, winning 125 (35.11%), losing 124 (34.55%) and drawing 108(30.33%) of its games.[6]

As of 3 October 2009, the South African team has played 426 ODI Matches, winning 264 (61.97%), losing 145 (34.04%), drawing 5 (1.17%) and getting a "No Result" in 12 (2.82%) of its games.[7]

As disappointed as I was yesterday, I agree with all the comments that it is not the end of the world (cup). We still have group games to play, and I am certain we will make it to the quarters (knock-outs). Yesterday wasn't a choke, we were just out-played.
I do feel that Saturdays game is gonna be an important one for team morale.

Kenya vs Canada today. Now on. Kenya batting first. Not the best of starts for Kenya.

Totally agree, yes the game was in the bag to a certain extent. But England just used the pitch to there advantage. And we know that SA hates spin and England bowled them dizzness towards the end. I still can't understand how is losing 1 match and still making it through to the Quarters choking. I am sure most of us knew that England was going to bounce back and that is what they did.

Watch out for England in the coming matches. England and SA to meet in the Semi's or Finals again.

Good to lose a game.
Proteas have the problem of over-confidence.

I dont beleive yesterday was a choke - but rather poor strategy.
They should have came out and played postive cricket.
Also Smith's inconsistent captaincy - not captalising when we were on top.

Saying that - we are not one of the favourites - our battin lineup is too weak with 2 world class batsmen whom we rely too much on, a captain out of form for more than a year, world class all rounder who bats too slow, Duminy who does well only against weaker teams, inexperienced other batsmen and the longest tail in SA history (since re-admission).

Suprisingly, our bowling lineup has now become our strength, with Steyn, Morkel and Lospy practicing line and length bowling, two decent spinners in Peterson and Botha and for the first time, the missing link, an attacking spinner who i beleive will propel us to the top of the test ratings.
