Cricket world cup discussion thread

Kenya are the poorest team in the tournament by a good margin.

Agreed. There "poor-ness" just worsened ... now 109/6 after 29.3 overs.

Reinforces the point that qualification in future should be no more than 2 to 3 months before, and not 2 years like happened for this tournament.

Mishra and Odoyo giving Kenya half a chance ... 163/6 after 41.1 overs.

They need partnerships like this against slightly better teams.I dont think they believe in themselves when playing better opposition.

Good to lose a game.
Proteas have the problem of over-confidence.

I dont beleive yesterday was a choke - but rather poor strategy.
They should have came out and played postive cricket.
Also Smith's inconsistent captaincy - not captalising when we were on top.

Saying that - we are not one of the favourites - our battin lineup is too weak with 2 world class batsmen whom we rely too much on, a captain out of form for more than a year, world class all rounder who bats too slow, Duminy who does well only against weaker teams, inexperienced other batsmen and the longest tail in SA history (since re-admission).

Suprisingly, our bowling lineup has now become our strength, with Steyn, Morkel and Lospy practicing line and length bowling, two decent spinners in Peterson and Botha and for the first time, the missing link, an attacking spinner who i beleive will propel us to the top of the test ratings.

Agree - we suffer from over-confidence - better to lose now rather than later. Our middle order is very brittle - yesterday just needed one person at 7 or 8 to just put their head down and play for the bad balls - instead, all went shell shocked and got bogged down

Missing a Boucher or a Pollock....

To everyone saying we choked, would you say England choked in their last game - well on the way to victory and then a tie with India?

I still think we have a good chance this world, despite a poor performance. Maybe it might be the wake up call we needed as we have only played against the minnows before sunday. Cant wait for the india game.

Choked, the Porteas choked!!!

The worst part are the "fans" that are defending the Proteas!!
I support the Springboks, but I also love how the fans criticise them! They not endearing at all they attack them and bring about change, the Proteas on the other hand, the fans defend them even when they stuff up? How does that work?

I have no idea if this is a total they can defend, but Kenya has posted 198 all out in their 50 overs and have given themselves a chance of a win.

Canada need 199 at 3.98 per over to win. I am still rooting for my African brothers to pull off a memorable win.

Observation: the batting powerplay overs seems to have worked against some of the teams. Tail-enders in particular seem to struggle. I reckon it's the fact that the in-field is too congested for players who are more adept at 1's and 2's than slogging over the top. Kenya was an example with 19/2 in their PP overs.

The Proteas won't win every single game they play. The idea is to allow them to learn from their mistakes and support them till the end.Criticism destoys their confindence and makes them perform even worse.Let's be constuctive and not derogatory.Constantly calling them chokers is harsh so let's move away from that.

You're talking to a Pakistani/Indian/Bangladeshi supporter, where you vent your criticism by stoning their (and sometimes their opposition's) bus and homes.

I am still optimistic about our chances but we should have wrapped the game up with 5 overs to spare.

Sounds like the 2003 WC, 2007 WC doesnt it? I me seriously now? How long will their supporters continuously baby them?
That game was a win, in the bag and they choked. They dont learn from their mistakes, thats a fact.
As for their confidence, its too high, always too high.

Best part about this is everyones quiet now, when they really have no chance of making it, then everyone will cry and criticise. Do it now while the irons hot!
They wont beat India and Bangladesh-80/Ireland 40 can pull off a win.

Dont be a hater now coz they play better cricket than the team you support!

When was the last time any of them won a 50 over WC? '92, when they scraped through the easiest route to the final? SA has always had to go through the likes of Aus in the semis, whereas your subcontinental teams lose half their matches and still had the easiest route to the finals.

SL won in 96, made the final in 07, Pakis made the final in 99, India made the final in 03. Proteas never made a WC Final ever, never ever not even once... :)
Pak won the Twenty20 WC and made the Final, India won a Twenty20 world cup.

I specifically asked about 50 overs, not hit and miss cricket.

As for your point about India and Pakistan making the final, that's already been addressed. Since '92 (since we're comparing them to SA), how many times did they have to knock out Australia to get to the final? And how many times did they beat Australia in the final?

And SL won it only during their 6th world cup attempt - this is SA's 6th attempt.
