Cricketer Phillip Hughes passes away

I agree and my objective was to hit the upper body - ribs or shoulder - as there never used to be protection there. Unless the batsman strapped a towel or two to his chest!!!

Fun days.

And that is my problem with the bouncer. It's a tactic used by the bowler to intimidate or concuss the batsman, nothing more nothing less. From a strategic point of view like getting him to get on the back foot a short delivery slightly off the off stump will serve the same purpose. The aim for the body or head is deliberate. Nothing more nothing less.

Of course it is deliberate and has been so since the body line series!

Thought the dude was hit by someone in a night club. Sheesh a workplace injury instead.

No I'm a South African and never seen or played Cricket... /facepalm

There are many south africans disinterested in cricket...you could equally say "No I'm a South African and never opened my mind to anything".....makes as much sense

Batsmen cannot have it both ways. If they are good drivers of the ball with no footwork, why should they be rewarded? Instead they should adapt to their strengths and weaknesses.

The underlying subconciousness of Hughes intent on hooking when he isnt a good hooker, is because he has been in and out of the test team, partly because of thiat. He was one of four batsmen vying for Clarke's position, and one of things he may have tried to prove (speculating) is that he is not afraid to hook and that his footwork wont let him down when driving after being forced back.

Steve Waugh was in same position, likewise one of best ODI players Michael Bevan. The latter never overcame his weakness to short pitched bowling and but for that would have played many tests.

Waugh on the other hand, because of the known weakness ,was targeted by bouncers and would have received more than most, including from the likes of Ambrose, Marshall, Patterson, Walsh, Botham, Khan, Akram, Donald et al...

....yet he wasnt hit on head once, after being dropped due to that weakness, he went on to play 150 odd tests, most runs at time...because he took the hook shot totally out of his game and just avoided the bouncers..."I won't play them so you may as well waste your bowling on it"

Again, please enlighten me on the reason a Bouncer NEEDS to be part of cricket. Only need 1 valid reason why it should be there as opposed to a normal delivery.

It's part of the bowlers attack. The way things are going we might as well replace bowlers with bowling machines and see who can hit the ball the furthest.

One-day cricket wide rules are already ridiculous. You cannot even follow the batsman when he steps away.

The object of the game is to get the player to either play the ball in the air to be caught, or to bowl him out. All of which can be obtained with him playing off the front foot.

Yorkers might break toes, maybe we should remove that as well.

I have let go off my no bouncer stance on the bouncer slightly as I see what you guys are saying regarding the back foot. Still doesn't need to be aimed at the Batsmen for it to be effective. Slightly off of off stump will work too. Why go for the head or the ribs?

Because you want to disrupt the batsman's stance, routine and get into his comfort zone. If he wants to drive all the time, buy him a car.

You want to mess with his footwork...

He has passed away about 3 minutes ago...RIP Phil Hughes

whenever I've seen a bowler throw one of these at a one of the batsman, I've always thought how dangerous this looks. now I hope the cricket board world wide will relook at this type of bowling. it's too dangerous and unnecessary.

who bowled that ball? he ain't going to feel nice about it now. shame for both of them.

Rest in peace. This is a dark day for cricket. Condolences to the family and friends.
