Five soldiers from the Tempe military base in Bloemfontein appeared on Monday in the local magistrate's court charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and robbery.
Four of the men are accused of being in possession of an unlawful 9mm machine pistol (semi-automatic pistol), while two were identified in an identification parade as alleged robbers.
One of the men, Lelulusu Lembese, stands accused of both charges.
Four of the men, troops at 1 SA Infantry Battalion (1SAI) at Tempe, were initially arrested for the unlawful possession of the firearm.
Later another soldier, Bernard Zuma, was also arrested.
During an identification parade held after their arrests, Zuma and Lembese were allegedly identified as the suspects in the robbery of a cash loan business in Church Street, Bloemfontein.
On Monday, the case against Zuma, 33, and Lembese, 31, as well as Zakele Buthelezi, 29, Thulani Ndlovu, 29, and Bhekumbaso Zulu, 37, were postponed to September 8 for formal bail applications. - Sapa
