Visible policing in Pretoria and Johannesburg saw significant drops in violent crime during the World Cup, security officials told Beeld newspaper in a report on Friday.

"Break-ins at houses in the south of Pretoria and Centurion decreased significantly," said ADT security company's managing director Clive Humphrey.

In the western parts of Johannesburg, crime reports decreased by 70 percent, while the eastern parts saw a 60 percent drop, said ADT Johannesburg head Roy Rawlins.

This was due to "visible policing combined with the strategic use of resources for the World Cup", said Rawlins.

Police spokesman Colonel Vishnu Naidoo confirmed that the cup saw a drop in crime but would not give statistics. - Sapa

No hey!?! Who would have thought that visible policing has this effect!?!

In other news:

Insurance companies are reporting a reduction in car hijackings but an increase in house breakings. Too many cars on the roads at all sorts of hours and lots of new big screen tvs.

ADT - that's the company that arrived 4 hours after a home invasion assault and about an hour after the cops left? Thank goodness the cops are about - they can shoot but I wouldn't trust their maths.

How can they say "crime has dropped", when year after year the government refuses to release crime statistics.

I call foul!

Its NOT stats from the cops! Did you even READ the article?

Went to get a case number last week at Sea Point police station after my car was broken into. I have never seen so many people in that place before. I asked the constable that attended to us what was going on. She said that the crime has more than doubled in the area since the world cup started.

Headline should read: Violent Crime Drops in little dorp somewhere in SA during SWC.

So people who live in Pretoria and Johannesburg and have ADT saw a drop in crime.

That's such a small slice of the population, hardly enough to make such a sweeping statement.

No, there was a drop in crime ...... in the tourist areas where there was massively visible policing. The suburbs however, well, there are a number of CPF's and the like reporting an INCREASE in crime during the WC .... why, because the criminal scum had to move away from the visible policing.

I did not see any police in my area, people should just be out more and not make criminals feel in control by hiding in fear.

someone should have said to these criminals "feel it, its here"

I was probably naive to think that when the entire country got all patriotic the crime levels would drop! These scum got no pride in their country.

The crime just moves away from the area with the high visible policing. This is hardly a groundbreaking discovery. Tourists benefit from lower crime while us locals who don't live near a tourist hotspot experience higher crime because we become easier targets.

Are houses in the south of Pretoria/Centurion really tourist hotspots?

I saw our local police out as much as ever, maybe even more than usual which was surprising seeing as pretty much no tourists would've been around here. Crime was normal too. I expected the same thing as you but it didn't happen at all.

Our local SAPS knew that criminals would take advantage of the WC especially in suburbia, so they just beefed up their patrols.

Yeah, why not introduce it years ago. Shows where priorities are.

.. visible policing has been part of the police strategy for years. Did you really not know this? A lot of police vans are even marked "Visible Policing". Still, we simply can't have the level of visible policing that we had for WC hotspots everywhere in the country. Most policemen would literally be doing nothing all day.

Sounds like you're beating your same old drum about World Cup spending.

PeterCH is a like a scratched record, and he will carry on moaning ad infinitum. Best to do as I have done, and just put him on "Ignore"

Who would have thought that some clearly ill-informed, supposedly educated, pessimistic morons would have been bleating on repeatedly before the world cup, even once we knew about the increased police presence, about how thousands of tourists were going to get murdered and raped! These morons even had the gall to continue arguing once it was pointed out that tourist areas were safe. They claimed tourist would still unwittingly venture into "dangerous areas" and be killed. What happened to that? They still claimed they were actively encouraging anyone they knew to stay away.

So now I ask you, who are the biggest idiots in this picture?
