Crime-fighting drones for Cape Town

Good news in my opinion, however,

“There has been an increase in the demand for drones in the law enforcement and security industry as the use of a helicopter is often not an option due to unavailability or impracticality,” said Dronetec.

“The drone gives similar aerial support as a helicopter without the hassle of all the paperwork and expense of a pilot and fuel.”

That bold part is more marketing, aerial support (and transport) is role based. The advantage with drones are that certain deployments can now be done more economically and discreet. In this case drones can take over the reconnaissance role in accordance with the article. Industry wise as with security, drones can prove to be very practical, also as indicated by Dronetec.

The US has established these UAV roles:

- Target and decoy
- Reconnaissance
- Combat
- Logistics
- Research and development
- Civil and Commercial UAVs

Then there are the US military UAV tiers pending on altitude and endurance.

This is all good and well and an excellent use of this technology, but what happens when the bad guys counter this with their own drones?

Mayoral Committee Member Safety and Security for the City of Cape Town JP Smith Alderman said ...

...see what is happening at the target property and instruct his officers accordingly,” said Alderman.

...so there will always be environments in which you need an aircraft, but drones can do a lot of good,” said Alderman.

You know that Alderman is his title and not his surname?

Bet this will not be used against gangsterism and the status quo in the poor areas will remain the same.

Imagine this in the hands of thieves, they will spy on you before breaking into your house.

There are countermeasures they can use against drones, and undoubtedly they'll do so.

BTW, they can't fly drones anywhere near CT International Airport. Let me check my map, and find out which suburbs near the airport have the highest crime rate...
