"Perpetrators see we are working together, which seems to be deterring them," Chubb security spokesperson Alison Bull told the newspaper.

ADT Security Services' national operations director Keith Alberts said there was a "significant decrease" in house break-ins and armed robberies since last year.

I just thought that we needed some good news. I know this is hard to believe because today a couple got brutally murdered in Vereeniging and 72 year old Granny's has to shoot criminals in order to defend themselves. But if we don't read the good news then we will just become really negative.

I think this is still probably the legacy of the Soccer World Cup as they mentioned in the article, but we still have a long way to go, and we don't have a World Cup every year.

I just quoted the security companies' views so that we can see that it is not the government that said this, although there is a part where the police also comments. They also only speak about one sector, that makes it hard to believe that it counts for crime as a whole. But positive non the less.

It's really difficult to draw any proof out of statistics like these when you realise how inaccuracte the system that captures that data is (read: great system buckled by undertrained / corrupt members of the police force)

Taking your news story into accounts, if the statistics are true, roughly 45 people are killed every day but it seems unless you're a farmer (boer or otherwise), a pretty blonde girl or a foreigner victim to a xenophobic slaying you are part of the 95% of the murders which at best, make a community gazette on the second page.

If crime levels are decreasing why are my insurance premiums increasing?

Housebreak-ins/burglaries are down in areas where we can afford armed response (ADT, Chubb, etc) and tactical response (CAP, Core Tactical, etc). The crime is pushed to other areas which don't/can't afford these services.

That's what I believe is happening as well. Now if we could just get everyone everywhere to work together despite the gap in resources.

The article from news24:

Johannesburg - Crime levels seem to be on the decline throughout South Africa, The Times newspaper reported on Monday.

Police, members of community policing forums, security companies and analysts agreed that crime levels were dropping due to co-operation between the law enforcement agencies and communities.

"Perpetrators see we are working together, which seems to be deterring them," Chubb security spokesperson Alison Bull told the newspaper.

ADT Security Services' national operations director Keith Alberts said there was a "significant decrease" in house break-ins and armed robberies since last year.

"I believe we are still benefiting from extra resources deployed during the World Cup. We are seeing a far more pro-active approach to crime prevention," he said.

Institute for Security Studies crime analyst Johan Burger said Consumer Goods Council of SA figures showed retail armed robbery fell from 282 in 2009 to 159 last year, while burglaries in the sector fell from 426 to 311.

Robberies in the sector caused a loss of R19.36m in 2009 but fell to R10.03m in 2010, while burglaries went down from R19.97m in 2009 to R10.07m last year.

Gauteng police spokesperson Katlego Mogale said a comparison of figures last year for different Johannesburg suburbs with statistics from corresponding periods this year showed a significant decrease.

I see your "Crime levels declining" and Raise you http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Vrou-keelaf-gesny-20110612 and http://www.beeld.com/Suid-Afrika/Nuus/Lid-op-patrollie-doodgeskiet-20110612

news24 is IMO a typical ANC oriented site as in general there were also low crime headlines and now after the elections we see headings such as that...
Go read some other news sites (just mentioning) and you'll see some shocker realities...

Not very bright, are we?

Beeld is News24!

I did reference two gruesome murders stories (or 1 murder and one self defence) in the OP. I know the realities of SA, a few of my acquaintances, friends and family have been murdered recently, so I think I know the reality of SA - but that doesn't mean crime is getting more, in fact I still think it is getting less.

Jip, if "we" include you then yes, "we" are not verrrry braaaaight... Different publications
"Beeld | Die Burger | Volksblad | Rapport | City Press | More Partners" - Partner sites...

@phoneJunky - agree on the term "less" in terms of amount maybe, not violence - I'd rather have 1000 petty theft crimes than 2 gruesome murders...

You'll agree though then that The Beeld is an ANC orientated newspaper then?

The rooster must be chicken-ala-creaming his panties over this report.

Err... no.

But then again, how exactly would statistics stop an armed robbery?

Did you report it?

Of course I reported it :)

Sorry, what I was trying to say was that statistics like these are pretty meaningless if you are affected by crime regardless.

If they say that crime as a whole has decreased, but it keeps on happening to you, then whats the difference?

I wasn't trying to say that the statistics would stop armed robbery :)

It means something is wrong in your community or something like that. Even if the murder rate comes down by 5% that will still mean about 43 murders a day, which you would agree with me is no small amount. But if it is decreasing every year, it means something is being done right (what I don't know, but something).
