Berlin - South Africa's economy and civil society are strong, ensuring the country will not follow the downward spiral of Zimbabwe, said FW de Klerk in an interview published in Germany, but he warned crime was driving out whites.

De Klerk, who shared the 1993 Nobel Peace Prize with his successor as president, Nelson Mandela, predicted a period of great uncertainty and warned that crime was driving skilled whites out of the country.

But he insisted in an interview with the daily newspaper, Die Welt: "The moderate centre is holding, across all racial lines."

The former president, who began dismantling apartheid on taking the helm in 1989, predicted that the dominant African National Congress would maintain its alliance with the trade-union movement and the Communist Party and remain in power.

He dismissed the fears of many regarding newly-elected ANC leader Jacob Zuma, bidding to take over when President Thabo Mbeki steps down after two terms in May 2009.

De Klerk predicted that ANC moderates would form a new party if Zuma took unacceptable decisions.

Fighting crime top priority

De Klerk, 71, expressed criticism of ANC leaders for a "racist undertone" in some of their speeches and he was also critical of Mbeki for his criticism of South African whites.

The biggest challenge facing South Africa was reducing poverty, said De Klerk, pointing out that about half the population was living under the poverty level.

The highest priority had to be given to fighting crime, he said.

Mbeki had recently for the first time acknowledged that crime was a serious threat.

"Now action must follow," said De Klerk, who helped manage a constitutional handover of power to a majority government under Mandela in 1994.

Law Transgressors.

What did Mr De Klerk expect when he handed the country over on a silver platter to people many of which had/have criminal records of their own.

Bit of a farce if people with Criminal Records are supposed to see anything wrong with other people committing crimes and then still act thereon. Rather make Laws that protect Criminals and while you are about it just give The Criminals in Prison The Vote, as who else would they vote for other than another criminal.

The word "Criminal" may sound like harsh words, but what other words could I use? Law Transgressor perhaps?

The Law Transgressors have us by the short and curlies.:D
 
I mean, he can't really say anything..... He was an apartheid leader, critisize the current government, he will be branded as a racist...
 
What should he have done? Said "No, you can't have your country back"? That would've been daft for all parties concerned.
 
WTF? They asking the marginalised white man if everything is going to be okay? How racist is that. Newsflash: we no longer run this place. Go ask Zuma.

Anyone notice the line "Civil society and the Economy are strong, so SA will not follow the downward spiral of Zimbabwe", then later on he says "Crime is driving the skilled whites away" ?
If most of the skilled whites emigrate who will be left to teach new skills in SA ? Think of the municipalities, Eskom, DOC, Police who purged their skilled whites before any skills could be transferred, and what a mess they are in now.

The plain fact is that the whites still hold the majority of skills because they had a better education. There are certainly blacks with skills, but not enough to fill the void, and couple that with the reluctance of Govt and home affairs to import skills like any sane country would do, and the skills shortage will become more acute.

The economy will certainly suffer and the downward spiral into Zim will happen.

I doubt though that any of our politicians can think that far ahead or if they even care.....

Why?

No doubt there is uncertainty about the future.... This is driving away the white man...

The whites, unfortunately hold 80% skills of the country (I'm not exaggerating) and pay majority of this countries tax burden.

There is less than 3.5million whites left from the original 6million+

The reason why Zimbabwe fell is because they chased away all the skills (in this case, the farmers, part of Zim's backbone)...

Oh, this country is falling... But at a much slower pace

I remember chatting with one of the Bosses who works at Portnet in Cape Town and he said his biggest problem is that the new entrants cannot fathom out how Portnet can book space in a container two years in advance as it simply defies their logic completely.

Goes back the our Electricity Crisis ..
Government were told and warned more than 10 years ago that by 2008 we are not going to have enough Capacity, so what did they do, imposed a Moratorium on the building of new Power Stations and basically forgot about the warning and plodded along from one day to the next not thinking or anticipating the impending problem .. like it will happen sometime in the future, but we worry later type of thing.
It goes for much of what Government does or rather doesn't do nowadays. Many wise people tell Government about impending problems, but do they hear, care or even know how to deal with it?
I said before somewhere else on this forum that the means test of Government is the Eskom Crisis as Eskom is Governement essentially and if they cannot even listen or take note of their own Untilities what good is it for anyone to try and say something or help in the running of this country as they simply don't or cannot listen or take note.

To add. Government has resolved to shut down The Scorpions. The Unit with the highest conviction rate. A unit which is surely doing it's job and they choose to close it down under the banner of integration into the SAPS. I don't believe it. Government is lying.

I understand why.... Why would they want a unit, with a 94% success rate, to arrest 70% of the parliament...

How is it racist? Bush has been called a monkey here before. So has McBride IIRC
