That is just Michael Moore tripe. There are loads of countries that have been through far more and do not have murder, rape or general crime rates like those of South Africa. For example, why would Apartheid make people kill babies for muti? Or rape children to cure Aids?

There are cities in the US that have murder rates in the neighbourhood of those in Cape Town and Johannesburg.
So you think those people do it because they're intent on harming the child or because they have the ridiculous belief that it will help?

There are countries throughout Africa that were under colonial rule that do not have crime rates like SA. There are countries throughout Europe that endured two world wars and foreign occupation that do not have crime rates like SA. There are countries in the Middle East that have been through more and do not have crime rates like SA.
It is their belief of traditional muti that makes them do it. It has nothing to do with the white man.

Search iol.co.za or news24...there are plenty examples in which the police force have been unable to respond because they do not have enough operational vehicles. There are examples in some major municipal districts in which only one police vehicle was operational. I myself went to a police station which was LOCKED. A police station is supposed to be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Why was it closed?

Yeah, most police stations now have private armed response because the people staffing police stations no longer feel safe just like the rest of South Africans. It hardly inspires confidence when the station staff feel they cannot rely on the police. The official government line is that having private armed response releases more police on the street leaving office duty police staff behind. BUT that doesn't explain why they can't rely on police vehicles to respond to station incidents. Why? Because there are so few police vehicles they know that a private armed response company is more reliable than their own police force. It is a joke.
Guys, just remember to be open to the possibility that there may well have been a decrease in crime over the period metered.
It is of paramount importance that even though there may have been an overall decrease (though alarmingly there are overall increases in most of the violent crimes), the figures are still unacceptably high, and more must be done both by the community and the government. It is a sad testament that Nqakula, T-Bone and Chief Mafioso buddy Selebi will all hail this very small reduction as an incredible achievement. It is not, and they should be fired.
We should, as a people of this country, continue to demand that the annual release of statistics a full year after the fact be scrapped, and that monthly statistics be given to communities directly by the relevant stations. It is impossible to know the truth of the current problem when staring at statistics that are effectively historic.

It seems the crime has spiked in the past year. It's good to see that crime is dropping but it will be interesting to see the results of 2007 are.
You are absolutely correct. But nothing will be done to drastically reduce crime levels because people (like Debbie2 and noxibox) share government mentality. Instead of addressing crime, they (like government) are obsessed with blaming whites/Apartheid for crime levels. Not only is it a falsehood but it is an EXCUSE to avoid the reality of failed government policies.

For the milliont time : Stats are manipulated. A true reflection is the news reporting of crime.
Even if that is true to an extent it certainly doesn't help that the police and criminal justice system is totally dysfunctional, mismanaged and understaffed.
No. It does not explain why dockets get lost. It does not explain the low conviction rate. It does not explain why a magisterial district that had ten operational vehicles now has one. It does not explain why a police station is closed during operational hours. It does not explain why illegal aliens are allowed unhindered access to the country. It does not explain why babies are killed for muti. It does not explain why children are raped as a supposed cure for Aids, etc, etc, etc.
