As an extension to 'What to do with my life', I was thinking this might be a great idea. Get to travel the world constantly until I die. Anyone know the costs associate with it? Most of the stuff I found online is just "snopes" hoaxes via email and people asking the same question without really getting an answer other than "it's a great idea"

I hope you're willing to sell your grandmother for this opportunity. Or at the very least your mother and your siblings.
Looks like a very expensive retirement option.

Generally cruising - costs being all-inclusive other than booze & tours at each port - is expensive ... count on a few million $$$ (not Rand) as a minimum retirement egg if you intend to go on a permanent cruise.

I did read - several years ago - that the Americans had the idea of cruise ships as 'retirement villages', with the 'body corporate' deciding the route, but I don't know if it ever came to pass. I do know that there were some very wealthy people who 'retired' in first-class on the QE2.

A minor hassle is that you will always go to ports, so if you want to visit an inland site you have to leave the ship. Obviously you can continue to pay for your cabin / leave your luggage on board whilst you are away, then rejoin the ship at the next port, but it does add to the cost.

Maybe for a year or three, but I think the novelty would wear off pretty fast tbh.

Cost is probably roughly what one would pay for an upmarket long term lease of a hotel room.

A more expensive liner - which is what you want if you're retiring and living aboard permanently - such as Crystal Cruises will set you back about $22000 a week.
