Redragon don't use Cherry MX switches so they can be cheaper than the Corsairs of the world. The ones I've tried have felt pretty good if a bit loud. They do come with RGB if that appeals to your kid.

Personally, I got a mechanical purely because it felt nice to type on...you could probably measure the difference in gaming with an ant's peepee.

Don't spend too much on a mechanical straight away. It won't be of much help in the beginning.

Happy to give him a rundown on the maps to use for practice and some tips to get him going.

I'm only Gold Nova 2 but my team mates let me down.

Thanks, any tips will be great.

They are a team of 5 grade 8 boys. I'll hear from him if anyone plays CS:GO to show him some tips. And I will let him watch the YouTube videos over the weekend.

Just to add, there are good membrane keyboards with 'the right' actuation, but they are a scarcity and the better ones cost the same as a mechanical keyboard. You require anti-ghosting, most membrane keyboard implements rollover tech which isn’t always as good as promised under circumstances as you will still experience ghosted keys.

For membrane, the Logitech G213 is a good starter keyboard, entry-level esports, or cheaper with the Corsair K55 at around R900-R1400 pending on where you purchase. These are all membrane, spending a bit more you will get a better mechanical and mechanicals are more durable which is a better investment and your son won't experience ghosting.

Locally the Corsair K63 or K70, mechanicals, are good choices at around R1500-R1800, but these are gamer-orientated. I would suggest looking at the Ducky keyboards as they seem to hit all criteria with positive results. Rebeltech stocks Ducky IIRC?

Personally I would say to go with brown switches in regard to gaming, and they are also better when typing than reds. Your son needs to decide on this, and do talk with the retailer to suggest which switch will be better in the use case. Keyboard switches and layouts are like gaming mice, horses for courses.

I doubt teachers know anything about CSGO, mechanically. However, I do know a teacher, a young teacher, who plays or did play CSGO professionally.

I will say it now, they will look at aim by means of whoever tops the scoreboard... which is a mistake, carries are what they are because they are good individual players.

Awareness comes with time, and only some people think outside of the box. The teams need to work on aiming, map knowledge, etc. and communication is the most important factor for realising all of those skills.

I'm not too sure what the teacher aims to achieve, but when I spoke to him last year he said it is to build teamwork between the kids.

They will also have the occasional matchup against different schools.

The incentives in the form of prizes for one. The additional incentive of a ranked system with different divisions for different skill levels. Those are the two big reasons. I feel that ESEA’s pickup system failed in South Africa because there were no incentives to keep playing. The ranks don’t really mean anything in the grand scheme of things which gives no reason for those serious about getting better to keep playing. For newer players it was intimidating trying to play their early placement games against SA’s best players. I’d wager many gave up trying after repeatedly getting destroyed by the professionals.

Billosoft already has the player base they both inherited from the old Intoxicated Pickups system and did much to expand on themselves. Their user interface is more intuitive than ESEA’s and the service is mostly free. This meant they essentially won the war before it started against ESEA. I do think that part of the reason more serious players get frustrated with Billosoft (aside from server issues) is that many players don’t take it very seriously. There is no real incentive to approach the matches with the correct competitive mindset. Valve matchmaking ranks are a reason players plug away at the game in the beginning. Billosoft never really provided something that gave players a similar reason to get better. Some players are on there to try improve or get valuable practice, while many other are just there for a laugh and a bit of fun. This inevitably leads to some heated and unnecessary arguments in game because everyone has different priorities. If you take the game a bit more seriously or are planning to, there is a compelling argument for you to get involved with the Souzern Lions League.

RIP Billosoft?

Not at all. Billosoft are the premier server and platform provider for South African CS:GO tournaments. That won’t change. From a pickup game point of view, the more serious players will likely move over to Souzern Lions. The regular players looking to have fun will still play Billosoft, even if they lose players initially as many make the leap over to the paid service to give it a try. There is a universe in which both services can co-exist because their focus is quite different. It’s better for the scene if Billosoft doesn’t go anywhere, just as Souzern Lions’ entry is beneficial.
