2021 load-shedding shocker

New data released by Jarrad Wright, principal engineer at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), shows that 2021 is the worst year ever for load-shedding in South Africa. And the year is not over yet.

Wright’s data, gathered from the Eskom data portal and announcements by the power utility, shows that South Africa experienced 2,416GWh of load-shedding this year.

Sure I read this last week?

That's the thing with cumulative totals, every week is a new record. Until next year when the counter restarts...

Wonder if this article would've existed if we did not have a global pandemic and an insanely over-the-top reaction to it?

Could easily be an obvious no.
We do know that this pandemic and it's resulting response put severe strain on many industries and ESKOM would be no exception.
Massive amount of strain, a lot of industries seemed to have forgotten about supply chains.

Problem increased by stock outs.

Customer 1: Can I order 1 Item X
Supplier: Sorry no stock
Customer 1: do you have Item Y, I think I can use Y in its place.
Supplier: yeah we have some in stock
Customer 1: Give me all your Y, don't wanna have a problem getting Y as well.

Customer 2: Can I order 1 of Y
Supplier: Sorry no stock
