Power cut here last night - south peninsula - from 12am to 4am... me wonders why they have to cut power in the middle of the night - surely there is no big load on the system? Or are they saving fuel (or something?)

Uum, excuse me while we fall off the end of the world!!

i See....

And so it starts??

Better in the middle of the night, when no1 is awake to use it anyway. But i also dont get why they would choose to loadshed then?

Are you shure this wasnt a very isolated thing? I dont think it has to do with load shedding, probably just a random power cut like we had in the old days.. often at night.

Perhaps it was just a normal power failure? Here we get them regularly - most frequently when the wind is pumping which is a good thing as it drowns out the sound of the generator.

Remember that this is by far the best time to make repairs to the grid, when no one is using electricity. My guess was that it was for routine maintainance.

I can see the lights of quite a few areas of CT (from where I live) - wasn't just the local area - also included other areas that I can see - don't think it was just a local failure. Dread to think it will be a similar thing tonight (my favourite time of day!)

/edit/- also it was exactly 4 hours long - so doubt a local failure.

Bit odd for them to be working on the grid on a saturday night though? I had my laptop on all night and it was still on this morning - I don't think it's battery can last 4 hours, although the screen was off ... but then again I woke up o find it has a blue screen :(

As long as they don't cut me off between 6-7 in the morning (how am I ment to be able to wake up with no hot water in the showers or kettle?) and in the evening, I don't mind a bit of chaos at other times :)

That would tend to say power cut. Me also wonders the reason for a late night/early morning cut - perhaps lots of people are running heaters? Perhaps they are trying to save nuclear fuel (is that possible?)

OH NOES! not again.. I just hope no cuts tonight, have to pull off a all nighter and study :/

well... I kinda been holding my breath to c when it's gonna start, so far I have been unaffected
/touch wood

Fortunately the weather has been really good of late- today was like 25 degrees in places!

Which should mean that people dont use so much for heating and whatnot and by the time that they do koeberg should be sorted again.

*holds thumbs

it was scheduled maintenance advertised in the newspapers all of last week for upgrading of some lines into the southern peninsula - a *once-off* event

I hope so dominic. Did see mention on the news about some issues last week but now back online it seems. Saw no mention of line upgrades - and that is one failure our area CT Saturday early morning, and one failure on this thread Plett - so hoping for stability - and yes, cuts really mess up a schedule. No cuts tonight - Yah! No jokes.

At least the main lecture theatres at UCT now have backup generators. Cos as much fun as it is to have a boring ECO320 lecture plunged into darkness and all run out into the sun, to remain there for the rest of the day with the power off, you have to catch up the work sometime, and the cuts earlier in the year really messed things up lecture-wise. :p
