How do you control your sugar cravings? I'm a smoker, and when I'm not at work I hardly eat and have a terrible habit of forgetting to eat. At work however, its a different story. I assume its the lack of nicotine, but I crave sugar basically from the moment I sit in front of my desk to the minute I walk out the door.

The downside to all of this is that it can have a really negative affect on my weight. In the last 6months I managed to drop 10kgs that I had picked up from bad eating habits but now I have started in a new company which has its own canteen downstairs, a coffee shop AND vending machines. I can feel the sugar calling to me :(

Help :(

What do you guys do?

It takes a lot of willpower, but keep a bottle of water or maybe diluted fruit juice on your desk.
Any time you crave sugar or want to eat, have a sip of water or juice instead.

Water works best, but isn't nearly as nice as something flavoured.

Never had issues with food cravings. I'm fortunate that I don't have a sweet tooth. I mostly hate sweet stuff and prefer sour, bitter & salty things.

you need to change your eating habits, the sugar craving is possibly part of a sugar addiction but if you're not eating properly in the first place your body is going to start giving signals that it needs fuel and these may be coming out as the sugar craving, rather ensure that you have healthy snacks and eat on a more regular basis so that the body doesn't feel like it's being starved

Above tips will work well but you can try an experiment aswell :)

Get yourself a desk calender (if you don't have one already) and basically each day you lay off the sugar, you put an X on that day.

The basic idea is to create a chain and not break it. If you do, you start over. Over time this will give you the willpower to lay off the sugar.

This is similar to getting things done (man am i procastinating with this :( ) like what Seinfeld did :)

Pretty soon i will try the above for getting some studying done...

Easy stop consuming sugar and you lose the cravings.

Btw sugar free or sugar alternatives is still sugar, avoid those too, also avoid all fruit juice i.e. natural fructose in quantities higher than you could ever consume eating the actual fruit, and avoid milk re lactose (another sugar).

It takes ~3 to 4 days to get over your sugar addiction... and then use the following mental control question when you feel like something;

When feeling hungry ask yourself if you'd eat for example: an orange, tomato, lettuce, ... If not it's a craving, ignore it and over time they'll disappear completely.

Most likely what you're doing is eating simple carbohydrates when you're hungry. That gets you into a cycle of blood sugar highs and lows. You can probably stop the cycle any time by having some real food. Something with a decent amount of protein and fat in it. Always a good idea to try to start the day with a good solid meal (not just cereal).

Keep drinking coffee.

If you like to snack while working, then go for dried fruit and nuts. They're fairly filling and less likely to create blood glucose spikes.
