On average, how old are the..items..on the server? P2P allows access to a variety - old, new and obscure. Are the binaries on the newserver only recent?

depends on where u get yur NZB from. usually 90days. sometimes 60 or 30days too.

i have 1 thats 110 days old and downloading :)

I think it depends on the group aswell. .movies.divx would have more staying time than .xxx for instance.

Not having much luck. Hardly anything downloads correctly, majority appears incomplete. Even items marked as 0.6 days old.
Guess you have to stick to mainstream items. Sucks.

You have to know how to download. All the things on the news servers are split up into sections, so you have to download all the sections and make sure that all the sections are available before you download it.

Visit http://www.newshost.za.net for nzb's of files to download and also a guide on downloading from the news server! Sign up to access the nzb section ;)

Yeah, I've had a look at that site. Nice, but local tastes.. MNET TV series don't really interest me. :p

Been using Newzleech. Tried Grabit, Newsleecher trial etc. Connection to server appears to be intermittent. Certain files are unavailable and then magically become available after failing (I have to continually reload the NZB).

Seem to have found a solution though (to my newsgroup noobness.. :D ) , using a straightforward newsreader and manually saving the attachments directly from the post. No problems so far.

You are going to get nothing more than about 20kb/s due to you pulling down uncached content. What you could do is upload your download NZB's to Newshost either as cached (once ur finished downloading) or uncached and it may even work in your favour, more importantly it will be helpful to others! ;)

I love international news servers, 430kb/s straight, come here my baby *Strokes*

International newservers? Might as well use p2p then. Easier. I'm only using a newservers due to the cheaper local bandwidth.

With news servers there is zero upload and no ratios to concern yourself with. There is also no shaping - esp with the likes of easynews where you can download zipped archives via http and at full line speed. ;) I use both and fully appreciate the pros and cons of each.
