Hey Chaps :)

Yeah another 'new build' thread :o. My current set up is going to be two years in Jan. & with all of you going upgrade crazy I don't want to be left out :o. Sadly my P5n32eSli doesn't take the new quads, only the C2D's which is sad.

So I'm left with the following dilemma:
1). Leave setup as is, proly get more ram & HDD.
2). Get E8600.
3). Sell mobo & cpu & get future-proof mobo & 45nm quad.

I do game now and again. PC used mainly for surfing, movies, e-mail, etc. The case is an el-cheapo, I've never attempted an OC and never will as I see no need really.

Kindly provide recommendation should you opt for point 3. The i7 in my opinion would suite those extreme gamers and overclockers. However you guys are the experts, so I humbly bow to your advise.

Thank you all in advance :)

Why upgrade your PC? Your specs are pretty good for what you use it for. My specs are about the same as yours and I'm not thinking of upgrading for at least another year or two.

Is this a case of money burning a hole in your pocket by any chance?

I would only upgrade your system if you can't play all the latest games on max detail. Your setup is pretty decent as it is. I'd rather stick the cash in a bank account and earn interest or something.

Good point ponder, yes I think so. My upgrades have always been motivated by greed to be honest. However in this case I just want to be in keeping with the pace, well I try to. Having Neotel has always brought up the space issue, one can't have enough HDD's.

Do you game a lot ponder and have you oc your system?

Dude upgrade you gpu maybe to a 4870 or 4850 the rest is fine.

Damn dude the rest is more than fine for gaming, surfing etc. The only thing is your gpu may not be the best for heavy games but yea not sure other than your gpu what you need to upgrade.

You can keep up with the current trend and get an i7 system but why? Seriously for your lite pc stuff that is going to be a waste. Put the money away and wait for something truly mind blowing to upgrade to.

Yeah, I would get bigger and more screens, but that's just me.

I actually thought about that hj but scrapped it as people will think I'm being a bit f'd up. Actually went as far as asking my mate to get a price on the same card he supplied me in August so that I could sli and get the T260 :o

Good advice chaps, thank you. Should I not increase my ram then? They say ddr2 800 will soon reach end of life and the prices will rocket like the ddr 400's

Nah, 4 gigs is fine.

Also you should check to see what the maximum supported amount of RAM is if you do want to upgrade. If it's more than 4 gigs, then maybe you could purchase RAM up to its' maximum for now. It's really cheap currently (RAM)

Thanz a lot guys :), think I'll just get me a 4gig pack (2x2gig). I'll post back here when I'm selling my other two gigs, it'll be either the 800 or 1066.

Uhm,

You didn't state what speed the current RAM you have is. If you buy a higher rated speed than your current, it will automatically adjust to the highest of them all. So if you have DDRII 800, and you buy 1066, it will be downclocked to 800. So you will be wasting your RAM...

Yep I'm aware of this kuga, I bought 2x1gig 1066 last December so I'm checking out the prices first. Thinking of getting these http://www.ngrcomputers.co.za/pc28500-ddr2-fatal1ty-2x2gb-67720-fata-p-13036.html, but these are cheaper http://www.ngrcomputers.co.za/pc26400-ddr2-plat-2x2gb-54415-volt-p-13742.html.

Should I get the 1066's now or wait for Xmas special?

Is it not the case that these differences in RAM speed actually only make up to 5% difference in performance? We discussed it just the other day...

I remember reading an article on Tomshardware.com the other day. They compared benchmarks for 3 gig, 6 gig and 12 gig amounts of RAM.

The results showed that their is no increase in performance what so ever. You would only need that amount of RAM if you doing some virtualization or running different games at once and alt tabbing between them.

*edit*

Alternatively, you could get more RAM and disable virtual memory (swap file) on your PC. That does cause a decrease in performance.
