Hi there
Stumbled across this forum and it seems everyone here is way more helpful than Telkom.

I am currently using 4Mbps uncapped with Telkom and these are my internet speeds that doesn't change much.

Local server

Download: 3.2 Mbps
Upload: 390 Kbps

International Server
Download: 1.43 Mbps
Upload: 388 Kbps

Are these the normal/expected upload 4Mbps speeds?? I am perfectly content with the download speeds but for an online job requirement, I need around 500Kbps upload even if it is temporary and 10Mbps is not available for my area/line. Anyway of boosting the upload speed even if it's just for 30 minutes :D?

4Mbps down
512Kbps up

10Mbps down
1Mbps up

No way of boosting upload speed... unless you disable everything else on your PC!

To increase your upload speed, you need to upgrade to an 8 or 10mbps package. Telkom recently released the 8mbps package, and from what I understand, most exchanges should support it, because it works on the ADSL2 profile and higher. It does not require ADSL2+ which many exchanges do not support. So if your exchange supports at least 4mbps (which means that it is ADSL2 or higher), you should be able to get 8mbps with no issue. Upload speed on 8mbps ADSL2 profile is 640kbps though, and not 1mbps. To get the 1mbps upload, you will need to connect to ADSL2+ equipment on Telkom's side. You also need to make sure that your modem settings are correct. To force ADSL2+, you sometimes have to disable ADSL2 on your modem, and vice versa.

The what now? How? Are you sitting on the grass next to the exchange plugged in with a LAN cable? :D

ADSL. Key letter is the A, for Asynchronous. Meaning download and upload are not the same.

If you want synchronous speeds, you need fiber.

Did you consider using a mobile connection for large uploads. Even if you only have 3G in your area you could upload at over 1Mbps.

/glances out the window to the left... :p

No, I mean that he should be able to get a bit better than what he currently gets (512 minus overheads) by disabling any apps that are also using the web...

Thanks for the response, its going to be a daunting task but I'll have to inquire about the 8Mbps. It took about four weeks, 63 consultants, 4 supervises and a few technicians from Telkom before I could upgrade from an uncapped 2Mbps.

8Meg also gives you 1Meg upload.

Spoke to the telkom sales and technical department, apparently they can't upgrade my line to an 8Mbps because 4 is the max. I'll have to consider other alternatives. Can't believe though that a 4mbps has such a terrible upload, my 2Mbps had a similiar upload figure

Try switching your router to ADSL2 or 2+. You might be able to get 640k upload.
